A Film with no plot!

After seeing this film at it's world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival I have to report that I am very disappointed. This is a truly awful movie. There is no plot or overall story to the film. It is just about Jolene travelling around the country going from guy to guy. She learns nothing about her experiences and leaves us feeling absolutely no sympathy towards her character whatsoever, in fact our lack of sympathy for her comes very early on in the movie and lasts for the entire duration despite one attempt near the end which seems very rushed and forced. As Joelene moves on in her journey she comes across numerous characters and different situations, each of these situations being the same as the last one and leaving us wondering if this film is actually going to go anywhere or not, or if a plot or story is going to unfold at some point. The makers of this film had access to a great cast. I've seen these actors shine in other movies which makes it even more shocking to me that they decided to take a part in this film, none of the roles did the actors talents any justice. The script is terrible and feels like it has been written by someone who has not experienced real life. The dialogue is very simplistic and the characters and situations seem very cliché. I've seen these same characters and same events in other films, but done much better. There is nothing unique about any of it. The wardrobe, set dressing and makeup also seems to be very amateur, camp and over dramatic. One character in particular, 'Coco' has been made to look exactly like Johnny Depp, reminiscent of the way Depp looked in his early years, which is very cringe making. The actor playing Coco also looked very much like Orlando Bloom and so I spent much of his screen time trying to decide whether it was him or not, due to the actor's bad accent which got me thinking 'Is this Orlando Bloom trying to do an American accent?', however I was wrong, it wasn't Bloom. The actress playing Jolene wasn't that bad and I would like to see her in more films, however the script and directing could not save her on this occasion. I would like to see what she could do with a solid script and a better director. There was absolutely no flare from the director, it was very conventional and safe movie making. The script was bad, but the director could have made something a lot better out of it, unfortunately he failed to do so. I know this film was based on a book, but I am judging this movie by itself and I am afraid that it falls very short. If you are looking for an entertaining movie which will take you on a journey, this is not the film for you. I've seen these characters and scenarios before. It's like 'Forest Gump' with a woman, and done badly. This has TV Movie written all over it.

I actually thought Rupert might have been a good actor, it just seemed like he was made to look exactly like Johnny Depp, which I thought wasn't really required. I don't know whether that was his own decision or that of the director, costume dept, etc, etc. When you get to see the film, you'll see what I mean.

I won't warn you off going to see it if you are a Dan fan, I'm not writing him off as a Director completely as Jolene is the only film of his I have seen. For me Jolene's hard luck story wasn't enough for me to care about her character or keep me interested in the film. She just didn't learn anything or grow from her experiences. When I see a film I want to be taken on a journey and I want to see that a character takes a journey as well. A journey in which they learn something about life and grow, whether that be for better or worse. Sorry but Jolene just didn't do that for me.

Well the actress playing Jolene was awarded best actress, so some people thought there was a meaning in it all. I read the story and I was frustrated with Jolene and didn't think she learnt much from her experiences until the very end when .... But I wont say what happens in case people haven't read the story. It is, however, a great story of human nature and if the movie reflects it I will be more than happy.
Cannot wait to see it as Michael Vartan is in it. Although as I am in Australia I am not sure if it will be shown in our cinemas which will be a shame!

I suspect that you are completely lacking in empathy. How do you know she didn't grow from her experiences? What exactly were you expecting ... the story ends when she's only 25.

The film was a journey but perhaps not one which you could see or appreciate.

Looks like a spanner, acts like a spanner ... it's spanner boy

Alex, Did you watch the film...it will never show on TV. Read the Doctorow story. It's five stories in one. Plot? It's called Jolene: A Life. It's five chapters in an abused young woman's life. There is no plot, per say. What's the plot of a life, anyway? Rupert was never meant to look like Johnny Depp, that would be a cheap trick, and one I'm not about to start playing at this point in my career. With dark hair and a bit of eye shadow, perhaps he does, but he did in Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont, too. Perhaps an accident you can blame on his parents, Again, he's lifted straight out of the Doctorow story. Sorry you didn't like it, but that's the way it's always going to be with this film. However, there are others that will. We all knew what some reactions would be from the onset. Glad you did react. The lead critics in Seattle gave us great reviews, and the audience picked Jessica as the Best Actress of the festival. And as I said, I was controversial when it was a 30 page short story - that's it's genesis - so, bring it on. Thanks for taking the time to write your feelings. Dan Ireland

Sorry Dan, I just didn't like your movie. I hope that is fair comment.

Lol. You have to love these internet critics. No one will listen to them in person so they come here and spew one long, horrible paragraph full of utter nonsense and fail.

I am afraid you need to read the story to really appreciate it and understand the plot, because there is one and a message as well! I cannot wait to see this film. I hear its coming out in July - is that an international release?

Does a film need a rigid plot or well defined story...? Or are we all just brainwashed into consuming to the same old formula, repeated over and over again to satisfy our expectations. Jolene is more a "slice of life" film. It's nothing new to make this kind of film but when the viewer has been raised on a "hollywood diet", it's sometimes difficult to step away and appreciate the merits of something a little different than what they are used to. It doesn't necessarily make the film bad or invalid.

Oh, I do not like hollywood movies, I will only see one if Michael Vartan is in it. These days I only go to the movies to see quirky, indie or European movies. I am really looking forward to seeing this movie. I also agree with you it is a 'slice of life'. I read the story written by E.L. Doctorow and enjoyed it and think it will make for great viewing.

Wait, I'm sorry--did "Alex Smithee" watch the same movie I did??....I don't know. Because I saw this movie almost a week ago & I STILL cannot stop thinking about it. And excuse me, "Alex Smithee" said this movie was like "Forrest Gump", but with a girl in the lead....Did "Forrest Gump" have a plot?!

I'm still mesmerized how the lead actress Jessica Chastain was able to transform herself *credibly* & *realistically* from 15 to 25. And the performances from seasoned, veteran actors in roles I HAVE NEVER SEEN IN BEFORE were both shocking & breathtaking! And Dan Ireland should be commended for bringing these performances to LIFE....I DARE you to tell me "Yeah, I've seen Frances Fisher & Michael Vartan in these types of roles before. And Dermot Mulroney--this is run-of-the-mill for him"....All three of them were BRILLIANT & only Dan Ireland could have done this.

Okay, this is a free country & people are allowed to express their varying opinions---but I'm still perplexed at which movie "Alex Smithee" watched, 'cause it sure the hell wasn't the one *I* saw....And the Rupert Friend-bashing. My God, this "Alex Smithee" only saw a bad Johnny Depp/Orlando Bloom wannabe. Okay, well first things first: I would watch Johnny & Orlando read the PHONE BOOK, okaayyy? Let's just get *that* out of the way. So being compared to these two is not really a bad thing AT ALL! And secondly, what "Smithee" calls as a wannabe--*I* see as the markings of a wonderful & incredible new CAREER!! I cannot *wait* to see what else Rupert Friend pulls off.

And P.S...."Alex"....I'm not surprised that you would bash this movie--considering that your "name" *Alex Smithee* is a knockoff of the infamous all-bad-things-in-movies name "Alan Smithee". Because of your "name", I wouldn't expect you to say ANYTHING nice about ANY movie WHATSOEVER. So it's funny....I would have to say you are the *perfect* person to talk about CLICHES & UNORIGINALITY.

Oh it's not fair I really want to see this movie being a fan of Michael Vartan. I haven't heard that it has been released yet so where did you see it and do you know if it is going to finally be released? Thanks so much.

reply

I actually saw a special screening of this movie in Los Angeles....I'm not quite sure actually when it'll be officially released. Either theatrically or on DVD/Blu-Ray....

But one thing's for certain---this movie DESERVES to be seen on the big screen!

I think that any film with or without a plot can be good. But entertainment quality is something that each person has to decide for themselves. The typical hollywood style film with standard formula is what pleases the majority of the crowd over and over again without a need for change. Although there are groups who like the slice of life films and documentaries, it's not what becomes a box office hit typically. Always know who the intended audience is before going into watch a film. If you don't like horror films, don't go see The Grudge, and if you don't like romance, then don't see The Notebook. So if you dont like anything other than the traditional formula for a film, then don't see those artsy, foreign, and slice of life films.

I get the feeling that you didn't like "The Godfather" either. After all it was basically about the tragic life story of a young man that ended up following in his father's footsteps as a criminal. Not much of a "plot" there either.

There's is definitely a plot. The story follows the life of Jolene from the age of 16 to 26. She is deserted by her parents and left to survive on her own. She marries her boyfriend hoping to start a new life, but when her boyfriends Uncle takes an interest in Jolene things turn for the worse. As Jolene travels across the country he runs into women and men eager to fall in love with her without ever knowing her past or who she really it. It's like she's an aphrodisiac that much be lust over. For each of these people she gets involved with things turn bad for them and Jolene.

Jessica Chastain acting was very good in this film. My only problem, which my wife saw immediately, was that Jessica never looks 16yrs old. No matter how much makeup was put on her. She looked like 25yr to me, but my wife though she was in her 30's. Jessica was 27 when she did this film. She acted the part perfectly, but didn't look the part at all.

If they ever decide to remake this movie in a few years, I would love to see someone like Jennifer Lawrence, Saoirse Ronan or Emily Browning play the role of Jolene.

I thought the actress was great and I loved watching her on the screen. Her character, however, didn't really ring true. She wouldn't have such a naturally innocent vibe about her after all she had been through. The character didn't develop much and left the viewer feeling nothing. What was the point of the movie?

reply

I agree. First of all, in order to buy the premise of this film, you have to believe Jolene is so enchanting and beautiful that men fall in love with her instantly. Jessica Chastain does not have The X-factor needed to carry this off. Even her seductive dance in the topless bar falls flat. She is cute, but no better than 100 girls you would see at a shopping mall. She is vacant, naive bumpkin, not a seductress.

Secondly, the rich dude she eventually meets was so obviously a mental case that it is totally unbelievable she would marry him, especially given her past experiences. Even the voice over mentions this, which makes her acquiescence even more inexplicable. At that point any residual empathy I might have had for her was drained, not that there was much to begin with.

Basically this is a story of a dumb girl who makes a bunch of horrible life choices and manages to use some well meaning losers for her personal gain along the way. Nothing is learned or gained. Everything bad that happens to her is of her own doing. I guess the message of the film is being a dimwitted, shallow slut is no way to go through life. If you meet someone who is obviously a demented scumbag, don't marry him.

I got to the OP's forth sentence and realized I was reading the words of a idiot, for I don't need anyone to tell me how a film makes me feel.

The film is a character study and for the record, Charactor studies don't have plots. They have themes.

A nice film and this is Jessica's first main, big role.
Too much naked and sex scenes for nothing. But I think everyone starts from somewhere or something like this. Still great job by Chastain. Great actress.

Life is more elegant.
