So basically...

This movie has NO point. It's about a wh*rebag who seems socially retarded if not even somewhat "regularly" retarded, effs anyone and everyone she meets, male or female until she gets married to a man who ass rapes her, is abusive and psychotic for no particular reason...and then he gets full custody of the kid they produced in their marriage after he nearly kills her in a fit of rage.

Totally unbelievable and ridiculous bullcrap movie. I am cool with movies being ridiculous and unrealistic if they are a least entertaining or have SOME sort of purpose or point. The point of this movie seems to be: don't be a dumb wh*re.

There IS a point, sorry you missed it.

Enlighten me then. I am being dead serious, not trying to be a pr!ck. What was the point or moral of the story? Aside from "don't be a wh*re"?

There was not a thing in this movie that could be believed when it is all put together as a whole (and much of it was not believable, period). And in the end no one learned anything and no one was a better person. This chick somehow had the unbelievably bad luck of being abused and taken advantage of sexually by almost every person in her life and in the end winds up with nothing.

What was the point?

Its all loosely based on a Dolly Parton song and apparently, the writers didnt seem to go any further than that as far as developing the characters any moreso than face value.

Oh, bullsh*t... yeah, I'm sure E.L. Doctorow was writing a book about a Dolly Parton song. Good Lord.

"It is based on the short story, Jolene: A Life by E. L. Doctorow, itself inspired by Dolly Parton 's song, Jolene."

Sarcasm is the last resort of the ignorant. Stop trying to instigate arguments with people for no reason, you come off like a goddamned annoying child.

This is from a story by E.L. Doctorow. His books typically do not have "a point." They are usually descriptions of what happens to a character as they move through a variety of experiences and meet up with a variety of people, often people who behave badly.
You probably wouldn't like his books, if you don't like this movie. They are more like neutral observations.

I have always wanted to read "Ragtime," actually. But something always stops me.

Maybe because it's boring. I've tried too.
