Time Period (spoilers)

When was the time period of this movie?

I just can't place it. I read somewhere it was supposed to take place over a span of 10 years.

At the opening, I thought it was the 50's, but then Dermot Mulroney puts in a CD in the CD player. Then Jessica Chastain was dancing disco with that the tattoo guy. But then there are no cell phones in the movie so it can't be modern day.

I suppose its centered in the present day but it does have shades of taking place in the early to mid 60s if not for all the modern cars and CD players and such.

"Lemme at 'em! I'll splat 'em!"

given the cars, the dress and the disco, I'd put it in the late 70s to early 80s

If this movie takes place in the '70s/early '80s, then this may have the most anachronisms I've ever seen in a movie. There are numerous shots where there are automobiles present that came out well after that timeframe ('90s+). Along with the dress and fashion of people in the move, there is absolutely no way this takes place in that time, not too mention the use of technology that wasn't available then (wireless phones). Additionally, in the Las Vegas scenes, the Luxor is clearly visible in the background. So unless the filmmakers paid very little attention to detail, this film takes place at least in the '90s, if not present day.

Anachronisms was my thought the entire time because I was so thrown off. It had to take place in the early to mid 90's at the beginning, although it looked like it was 1979 by all other accounts. All the music in the film took it back even farther as none of it gave any clues to the current era, like when she's mopping the floor. The car hop scene was very 50's also, yet she's suddenly in a grunge era setting with only Coco's fashion to really show that because the music didn't. Then in Vegas Sal mentions the glory days of 30 years ago and has a cell phone. That has to be after 2000. Let's say she's 21 by that time since she's working in a strip club. I had a hard time believing she went through that many serious relationships (even if they implied haste, it was really the other people manipulating and falling in love with her, not the other way around) including being courted and having a child all after she "straightened out" her life. When she said she was 25 at the end, I was flabbergasted.

I loved the movie, but it was a lot to try and take in when everything was screaming contradictions.

I thought it took place in the 90s. I grew up in a small town in the south that even today looks very 1950s, so the old fashioned looking small town that this started in didn't look odd to me.

Maybe she's a time traveler.
