A general lack of above average series nowadays?

I'm for a lookout after a good show to follow, after watching Firefly (until it was cancelled, though loved) and still watching SG:A, I ran by Painkiller Jane, which kinda reminded me of some hardcore sci-fi Heroes kinda thing, as a first impression (before watching the first episode, that is).

I eagerly sat down in my comfy chair to watch the first episode, and when it was over I sat with an open mouth, wondering. The writers of this show couldn't be serious with the plot? It's so unbelievable thin, so shallow. I decided to watch 2 episodes before abandoning the entire show as it was predictable and quite embarassing to watch.

There're like 3 or 4 actors who's playing with a credibility which satisfies me, and Kristanna Loken is not one of them. I'd write a thouroughly review, if it hadn't been for the fact that it doesn't deserve one. Honestly.

Anyway, this makes me curious about if there's going to be any good Sci-fi shows coming in the near future which has more quality than the latest ones? Or is the audience content with this... this... thing? I know money has a lot to say when making a show, and I can't demand perfection, though I can demand better than nightmarish.

that's my three cents anyhow, feel free to blow my head off or comment :)

The show vastly improved later. The first episode isn't so bad if you watch the whole series and then watch the one episode again. You see all the clues you missed upon your first viewing.

As far as good Sci-fi goes, the only show I watch is SG:A, but that seems to be only for this season, unless it gets better. There's been like what, 1 maybe 2 good episodes thusfar?

The Sci Fi genre is dying; mostly due to a glut of inferior movies and series (like PKJ).

You just can't find exceptional SciFi anymore.

Yes there is, Battlestar Galactica. But I agree there is a general lack of shows in that league.

If you mean series in general I think there are some gems out there, you just have to look and be open, a lot of shows seem like they might be bad but they grow on you and have charm. While I think this show is awful (sorry to any fans) there are some really good shows out there.

BG is at least debatable. I don't consider it "exceptional Sci-Fi" but I know it has its fans, and at least it's not AWFUL.

On the other hand - most shows in the Sci-Fi genre are nothing short of AWFUL. The crap the SciFi Channel is spewing is unforgivable.

For the record, part of the reason BG doesn't qualify, to me, is that it can only marginally be considered "Sci-Fi". It's more a human drama which just happens to be set in space.

BSG *was* excellent. It went flying off the rails a couple of seasons ago. Barely watchable now IMO.
