Why can't they make a real sequel

When I first heard about Wargames 2, I was so excited. I was looking forward to Matthew Broderick or Ally Sheedy or both resuming their roles. Instead, they have all fairly unknown actors, a weak storyline, and a straight to video movie. This could have had potential to be a good movie. One wonders if they even bothered to contact any of the original actors to at least TRY and get them in a new Wargames movie. If they can't do it right with the original cast...then leave the movie alone and don't even make another one. I am sick of these new movie producers taking great movies from my childhood and making cheap and worthless sequels. (I heard that the Goonies may be next)

I couldn't agree more. I think this movie could've been really well done with Broderick and Sheedy's characters married couple who's teenage son/daughter get tied into a government consipracy or something along that line...

I worked on that movie

there is a Falken played by a mostly unknowned canadian actor
and that's the reference to the first one ...

Wargames are just not as entertaining since the end of the cold war in 1991 :(

I'm with you on this.

Didn't have to Broderick and Sheedy (although that would have been fine with me.)

But, spend 45 seconds on this movie page on IMDB, and you KNOW this unadulterated CRAP.

Of all the tired, dead-before-they-hit-the-ground big-money sequels that are being made out there, you'd think real movie-makers could see the potential to make a compelling movie from the groundwork laid by War Games.

It's sad.

Why couldn't they have made a real sequel? First off, it doesn't have to have all the same characters to be a REAL sequel. It had the professor, and the W.O.P.R. from the first movie. As for the original actor, do you honestly think his character or anyone related to him would be stupid enough to trigger this sort of thing again?

And if he were in the whole "Government Agent" angle, you'd all be complaining about how they made the character a sellout.

Thirdly, even if they did make the sequel, exactly the way the fans wanted it, there'd still be about forty million *beep* on the internet who would trash it when it was announced, trash it while it's being made, trash it leading up to the release, trash it when it comes out, and trash it when the DVD comes out.

Which is exactly what people do with every movie that comes out that doesn't meet 100% of their expectations. People, sit down, shut up (stuff your mouth with popcorn and candy if you have to) and watch the damn movie. If you don't like it? Shut up about it. Don't see it again. Suspend your disbelief and don't be so anal about every little detail, you might actually enjoy yourselves.

Are you kidding? Why on earth would Matthew Broderick do a sequel? And it wouldn't even make sense! What will they make him? A 43 year old hacker?

This movie should never have been remade at all. They would have made more money had they simply released a 25th Anniversary Edition DVD of hte original.

However, making a true sequel with the same actors playing the same characters would be ludicrous.

Wargame II: the musical

I don't think that the original leaves much room for a sequel. It's a self contained story about about a once in a lifetime encounter between a computer hacker and the people in charge of nuclear weapons. There is really not anywhere left to go with the story.

You could bring David back as a federal agent agent or expert in computer security systems who gets caught up in some plot involving criminals or terrorists. But if the last 20 years have shown us anything it's that using computer hackers as the main plot device for a thriller often comes off as hackney, cliched and most of all silly.

Yea I'm looking at you "Die Hard 4," "Firewall," "Swordfish," "Net Force," ect.
