They specifically say in both the first WarGames and this one that the computer would interpret a power loss as complete devastation and defeat, and then order the sub-computers to carry out their last orders - ie launch nuclear missiles in both movies. There's a whole exchange about it in the first one that's referenced here too :)

General Beringer: Just unplug the goddamn thing, Jesus Christ!
McKittrick: That won't work, General... It would interpret a shutdown as a destruction of NORAD! The computers in the silos would carry out their last instructions that they'd logged! [Meaning to launch the missiles].
At exactly 1:37:00 into the movie :)

what if there really is a power outage in the country??

then by this logic the computer will destroy the entire country and possible the world because of a power grid failure!

wtf!!! even if ripley has backup generators, norad might not have EVERYTHING on backup,

my country experiences power loss quite often

thank god no invented such a hair brain computer

Why...So..Serious? Let's put a smile on that face of yours!

Well, actually Windows Vista can play some games. Mac on the other hand would have crashed the *beep* out of itself if it tried to play a game. So they should have done that.

Were it so easy.

Actually just install any Windows operating system since 1995, it will inveriably crash without any notice whatsoever. I believe that Windows is just a very popularized viral software that the more they try to improve on it the worse it gets. I'm so very glad to see that they're phasing out user software just for Windows operating system. Microsoft really needs to improve on it's base OS before adding any more bells & whistles, it's now bloated beyond any REAL usefullness. I would never think to buy a car with this much useless baggage, the cost of gasoline & resources alone to just carry around all this uselessness causes me to shop elsewhere.

You think that is bad, wait till you try Windows 7 if you haven't yet.

Nope! I think my next move is away from Microsoft all together... LINUX has some very nice packages... and they run right off the installation disks... plus upgrades are simple, just get the next free version release or purchase a low cost replacement. I personally have 10 different LINUX versions to chose from ...my total cost was $30 @ 1.99 a piece... sure beats $200-$300 a pop for microsoft. I love it! I used with fastest DVD player I had & fastest processor I could find and I crush Microsoft's performance power. I'm still awaiting some multimedia apps that are still in development then I'm tossing Microsoft alltogether. Macintosh was my next choice but they're machinery is very costly, however their customer service outstanding ...and is completely FREE!! I had a complete re-installation + apps done on one of my machines at the Apple store... my cost was ZILCH!!!... imagine that! I'm not too crazy about they're teaming up with Microsoft however... Their new OS looks & behaves a lot like WinXP... what a waste. Macintosh was also really great in removal of it's apps... You just drag folder containing the app to the "TRASH" can... Empty the "TRASH"... Poof! it's gone... space is freed up immediately and no restarting.

If I bought a car, like I had invested in Micro - software... it would still be in the shop for repairs. I've never seen a company get away with so much as I've seen Microsoft. I ask you, "What's wrong with an OS that needs upgrading every month"... EVERYTHING!!! Microsoft spends more time updating my OS than I spend using it... LOL! I tried to stop them from poking around in my machine but then I start getting error messages. I thought I owned the software, apparently I do not... I'm leasing it, thats what they call it!?! Anyhow good luck on your next upgrade.

Windows 7 esp. Pro, is AWESOME!!! :-)

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

That's funny. I used the same joke over on the Terminator Salvation board to no avail. People just don't understand the value of a good joke at Bill Gates expense.

If you want to stop the computer from being able to play games, I think Mac OS would be a bit more effective. :)
