I didn't get the ending scene

What happened?

Did Christie die, was she ill of something? What was wrong with her? At first, I thought she might be pregnang, because she 'needed the one that loves her' or something confusing like that. I just didn't get that ending at all...

Remember this movie was set in the early 80's, during the time that AIDS started to spread around and killed a lot of people.
Back then, only a few people knew (or even cared) what AIDS was, to take the necessary precautions.

Christie was having sex with everyone around her, so it's most likely that she got infected. She was a shallow girl, life to her meant nothing if she couldn't look good and have a good time (parties, drugs, sex). Getting infected with AIDS would take all that away from her, so she was in denial. That's the meaning of her sunbathing at the beach instead of being in the hospital getting treatment.
When Graham says to her "The sun is over" or "There's no more sun" (don't remember his exact words), I think it meant that nothing is forever. It didn't matter if they were young, rich and looked good, eventually their life of hedonism would end.

In context of what was shown in the movie and the small TV news clip when theyre describing a new and hazardous fast spreading virus i think is a parallel to what we would later see happen to Christie in her carless life of unprotected sex, orgies, drugs, and partying

In my own imagination Christie was the victim of the vampire subplot that was in the book.

It was the end of an era with the dawn of AIDS

I assumed she had AIDS. That is actually a GREAT scene and probably the scene that really makes this otherwise very mediocre movie memorable.

Amber still looks REALLY good though for someone dying of AIDS. I don't think you'd want to use her as the poster child for the disease. . .

I agree with psdhart. Her dying on the beach shows the end of era of hedonism and wanting it to continue and ignoring what is really going on. Not everyone who has AIDS dies slowly. I read about case where as this man was very healthy, came down with a cold two days later developed pneumonia. Checked into the hospital and on the third day died.
