Brad Renfro ruins the movie

I don't mean to be insensitive, and I'm aware he had some personal issues, but still -- his performance here was abysmal: the most hammy, jittery over-acting I've seen in some time. I guess the blame should fall on the director, whose job is to rein in his actors and, well, guide and direct their performances better. But I literally found every scene Renfro was in cringe-inducing.

.......i kinda see your point-But Overall he Did great i feel-I was not sure it was him at first But his ending scene-was more believable-(leaving w/Mickey Rourke).......Also the director in special feat*/comments that he was having to "PULL" certain emotions 4 Brad 2perform accordingly-& said It was a challenge a bit for both-BUT when Brad decided 2 "go there"-that it was WELL EXECUTED & Ended up being the Directors Favorite?Realistic Scene in the entire movie!! I ABSOULUTELY WAS SURPRISED/SHOCKED/INSPIRED & ENOYED THIS FILM!! KUDOS!

Likable?!? Are you serious? I agree that he was annoying as fock, but letting the kid go was his saving grace character wise. And as far as likable, what bout Tim? With such a clueless prick of a dad, I felt it pretty easy to sympathize with his character.

When Jack was hitting on Graham after the gunshots.....eewwww gross.

If someone above my post didn't swear on here.... I would have agreed with him that Tim's dad was a worse character. Les was such a creepy tard of a drunk. After Les, then it would be pervo girl beater, Bryan. I think all the characters were bad except for Tim because Lou Taylor Pucci is hawt and he's a great actor. Tim was the only normal person in the movie.

Renfro's responsible for one of my favorite lines in the movie.

Jack wasn’t hitting on Graham, he was trying to connect with Graham, he was alone, scared, desperate and vulnerable. He was crying out for help in a city where no one sees you for who you are, only for what you have that benefits them.

He must be quite an actor to wreck this masterpiece.

Could not disagree more with the OP. I thought Renfro's performance was the best in the movie along with Mickey Rourke. Thought they were both pitch perfect.

Are you freaking kidding? Renfro turned in the best portrayal of an insecure, sweaty, twitchy train wreck that was comparable to Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance in "Happiness." He was the picture of complete desperation. He was so believable that I read a lot of comments on the internet from people wondering if he was acting at all, or if he was actually that messed up in his real life. When you can't tell if an actor is acting, that is the highest compliment you can pay him. He was a talented guy..

"IMdB; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...'

reply

Yep, exactly. I don't even he was acting, he was the character.

Maybe he didn't have a criminal uncle in real life, but he certainly got along with some unsavory people, and I'm sure he struggled to find gigs as an actor just like in the film, being forced to get jobs such as bartender/clerk or doorman as in the film, something common amongst non working actors. Although not mentioned, it's very likely he was abusing substances in the film as well, which explains his unstable behavior, so another common link.

In fact, according to the trivia section on IMDB, and it's probably true, BR was strongly considering giving up acting when he got cast in this thing... So he was clearly a man with nothing to lose. He hit rock bottom as far as life is concerned.

Actually, I disagree. Every character in this movie was screwed up in someway , and I think he did a good job. He was not over-acting in the slightest. The movie itself is cringe inducing, but not as bad at The Canyons.

Always look for the positive in every situation.
