what was with the guy hiding in the barn?

There were several scenes of a guy hiding in a barn, eating from a plate that was slid under the door. What was that all about?

At first, I assumed it was meant to be Nick but then Nick showed up with his plausible story. Anyway, the barn door was half-rotted away so the barn "hermit" could've escaped easily enough. So it couldn't have been him.

Did the director change his mind halfway through and not bother to go back and edit? Or did I miss something?

It was Nick. He later explained to Tia that he had walked away from his climbing group to find a cell signal to call her before the climb. That's when the avalanche hit and he was not with the group.

He said a group of locals found him but they arrested him because he looked similar to another white man accused of drug smuggling. So essentially he was in prison there. The only reason he got out was because the prison guards got into a firefight with some local rebels. They don't explain it any further than that.

So, yes, it was Nick :)
