Did anyone else cry? *spoilers*

I didn't at first, because I was just so distressed...or rather depressed, with how horrible the ending was, but when I watched the ending again, at the point when Charles Grey mentioned

"And I have a niece....Eliza...who is very much loved,".

I just broke down after that. Imagine having to stand silent knowing that someone else is raising your own child, having to live in a house with your husband's mistress...I so dearly felt for Georgiana during that scene.

reply

I could not keep my eyes dry ever since the duke starts sleeping with his mistress. Because since that scene, everything was just sooooooo depressing.

I started balling when they took her child away. That was like the penicle of her imprisonment, she really didn't have any freedom after that. And when Grey said he was engaged in the end. That sucked big time.

reply

I had tears in my eyes when she gave Eliza up. Keira absolutely nailed that scene.

Yes, indeed, I agree! The slow marching towards Grey's father was like walking to your death sentence. In general I think Keira nailed this film. Unfortunately she tends to be quite irritating in some films, imho.

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

I cried too and during the scene where she gave her baby away I expected her to jump into the water with the baby or something out of desperation.

I cried at several moments in the film.

reply

I agree. That scene made me cry.

There are no mistakes, only lessons.

reply

Yeah, that's the scene I cried at too. Her pain was very real, and imagining myself in that same situation made the scene all the more anguished.

The movie was so depressing im still recovering from it the morning after..

reply

The scenes concerning Eliza probably affected women who have children much more. I have none so really those scenes weren't a big deal for me. I found the most poignant scene to be the once where G hears Bess and the Duke having sex, the one where she's wearing the Fox outfit.

reply

me too ... I guess that is why I am imdb'ing this movie like crazy.

I still feel a little distraught - like why couldn't this have ended better for her? Stupid men and history ... sheesh!

is there any one who's a woman and didn't cry? i suppose men could cry too, but it's just such a 'series of the worst things' that could ever happen to a girl...

i'm just surprised they didn't put it in the tragedy genre.

The performance byt hte Duke was also great, I mean you can tell sometimes how a bastard aristrocat he was, but also that he wasnt happy living that way...

I did cry, mostly when it comes to a sacrificed love... UNNECESSARY ONE!! Charles I would have gone with you!

I have to agree that Ralph Fiennes did I great acting job. Really, given his lines and actions it would have been so easy for the character to turn out as completely evil, however there was something about Ralph Fiennes portrayal that made the character a somewhat tragic one, that no, you didn't like, but you didn't loath and felt some sort of sympathy for. I almost wanted to hear his life story.

I cried too. Almsot all through the movie.

I cried at the end starting when she had to give her baby up. After that I was pretty done, tears pouring everywhere even after the end credits finished rolling.

I didn't cry but I was burning up with anger. G had to suffer through endless humiliation at the hands of people she loved dearly. William betrayed her with Bess, Bess betrayed her with William, William forced her to give up her child and the love of her life. While William and Bess got to have not only Bess'children but William's bastard children with his past mistress and with Bess. G spent her the rest of her life living in a humiliating, heartbreaking prison. I didn't feel at all sorry for Bess, she got to have her cake and eat it too, all at G's expense. So much for friendship.

reply

Yeah man, the scene where Georgiana gives up her baby, I just burst out into tears. I really felt it and could not hold it in... Keira did reaally well in that scene.

reply

I guess it was kind of a depressing subject, but I did not feel for the character even for a minute. I guess Keira Knightley is just not my cup of tea, she is a boyish girl in every movie, the least motherly mother ever in this one. She does not age at all or become more of an adult.
Huh. Just came from the premiere, was very disappointed. I was looking forward to at least a good love story.

I had to watch this on a United flight tonight and must say....this movie SUCKED! Sad, depressing and utterly stupid...if this really is the way the Brits were back in the day, then good for us for leaving their sorry asses. A) The men are douche bags for the way they treated their women and B)the women should have stood up to these pricks. No wonder it was so easy to kick their ass in the late 1700s.

I cried because I had just wasted 1 hour and 40 minutes of my life.

Yes, I cried. I cried more than I had over a movie in a long time. I was especially crying when G started freaking out over letting Eliza go.

I cried too. I usually try not to watch movies like this because I tend to cry. I think Keira did an excellent job in this movie and I don't usually care for her. The Duke I absolutely wanted to reach through the screen and kill because he kept trying to get sympathy when he was having everything his way. She had to give up everything that meant anything to her while he had his cake and ate it too. I also didn't feel sorry for the Bess character either.
