Aristocracy

The English paid much too high a price for their beloved aristocracy, the aristocrats themselves not the least among those who paid. Now, many Americans seem to be panting for aristocrats of their own. When they get each other, they'll deserve each other.

There're still plenty of members of the peerage (aristocrats) in Britain... it didn't end in 'the olden days'. Those hereditary titles just keep on going with each new generation.

Hi Annabelle,
Yes, I realize that. The English are still abuzz over William and Kate. Maybe it's a human trait to want to feel that we're beneath some people and superior to others. If that's so, it wouldn't surprise me. But it does unsettle me that we're so petty as to stoop to idol worship on the one hand and racism--as an example--on the other.
