Ladies, would you want that style of dresses to come back?

I know they are a lot of work but I think men would appreciate it. I know I would.

I am a man and I would gladly give birth to a baby if it were Keira Knightley's.

I would love to wear these dresses. They are gorgeous and they look fun to wear, but I wouldn't wear them to entice men, I would wear them because I want to play dress up.

I sure hope you are a woman..:)

Defs not, that fashion so impractical and of an era when women had no role other than to look pretty.

It'd be fun to dress up in those clothes for a while, i'm jealous of Keira Knightly being in so many period dramas where she gets to wear such beautiful clothing, but I would absolutely not want to wear them every single day of my life.

If i'd want any period of fashion to come back it would be 1940s post WW2 fashion, which is just lovely, and classy, and practical.

Songbird, you've got tales to tell.

Into-dust, Can you post a link of a pic of the sort of fashion you are talking about?

reply

It's the sort of thing Rachel McAdams wears in The Notebook.

Nice. Better than the unisex clothes most women wear today.

Who says you can't wear the clothes from the 40s? Because of what others might think. Who cares. Well, except to work, of course. But seriously, why shouldn't everyone dress the way they want to, not the way society tells them to? Who cares what's fashionable these days.

Regarding the dresses - they are definitely beautiful - but not comfortable to wear and yes, in a way women these days were only there to look pretty and birth children, so it's an extremely miserable life for any woman of intellect to play dress ups all day. Thankfully they didn't know what they were missing.

It would be fun, but not for every day. Just imagine driving in one of those looks. The skirt would be a total pain to work around. Not to mention it wouldn't be super comfortable to drive around in a corset. I do think it would be cool to dress for dinner or special occasions in variations of these looks. There's no way I'd be interested in maintaining those hairstyles though. Too much work. Plus the feathers would again make it hard to be in a car without having to sit on the floor.

All good points....I suggest the bus..:)

I love these sort of clothes. I love sketching out dresses like that. If I was any good with a sewing machine I'd make my own line of eighteenth century clothes to look more modern and practical. Sort of steampunk style, but not as late a period.

*giggle* This discussion reminds me of when my friend Rick and I were seeing Topsy Turvy, the movie about Gilbert and Sullivan and the making of The Mikado. Now, I love costume dramas from Gone With The Wind on--like many of the other ladies in this thread, I like to imagine wearing one of those beautiful women's costumes. So during one scene where we see W.S. Gilbert's wife in a lovely blue dress with a bustle, I whispered to Rick, "Boy, they sure knew how to dress in those days, didn't they?"

He whispered back, "No, they didn't! They BOILED in those dresses!"

And I guess he has a point. I'm not sure I'd really love being under pounds of material on a hot summer or even a warm spring day. And those CORSETS--ay-yi-yi! But it's fun to dream, isn't it?

reply

Not really.

The dresses Keira Knightley wears in the movie are absolutely gorgeous because they were the equivalent to ultra expensive high fashion designs like Balenciaga, Prada and Chanel in todays world. She was rich, most people weren't. Average women back then wore extremely plain dresses on a day to day basis.

Not to mention the impracticality of it. I work for a museum and every halloween we have a themed month. Last year it was Vive La Revolution, and everyone dressed up in completely historically accurate clothing of that time period. Every single day. For a month. Corsets hurt, they leave horrible marks on your ribs. Yes I looked thinner and my boobs looked awesome but by the end of the day I had welts on my stomach. My dress got stuck on everything and it was heavy as all hell, about fifteen pounds with everything on. And not to mention I needed another person to actually help me get dressed. It's just not going to happen in todays society. Normal women don't have servants to dress them, or the money to buy such extravagant outfits.

If we could I would.

It would be so much fun to dress up like this to a party. But sadly I wouldn't know where to find the clothes, and then there's the hair and the make up. Too much trouble.

Also... I can kill you with my brain

reply

No, I didn't much like their style of dresses. I much refer the Regency era empire waist gowns.

Of course not! The dresses are beautiful, I love seeing them in films, but wear one? Never.

The Wire...the best series in the history of television

I would love to have a few stashed away to wear occasionally. I find them incredibly beautiful, but to wear them all the time would be impractical, not to mention uncomfortable and very bad for the internal organs.
