saw this movie on channel 4 today (christmas eve) and loved it. im a fan of stop-animation after seeing nightmare before christmas so long ago. the visuals are brilliant, the score is also brilliant. i enjoyed the fact there was no dialogue so it was universal and people dont get annoyed if they didnt like the voice actors (mainly american voice actors annoy...everyone). now im going to buy the dvd.

Thought this was quite cool, tad eye popping in places due to the nature of the violence as it appeared to be aimed at kiddies. Loved the way it followed the music though, a piece which I have really liked since I was a kid.

Should imagine it would have been stunning with a live orchestra!

It is good with a live orchestra. I saw it here in Perth, in the Supreme Court Gardens (open air) on big screens, accompanied by the Australian Youth Orchestra. They took no liberties with Prokofiev, and it worked perfectly. We had our 7 year old nephew and he was entranced, even given that we were along way back and he had to sit on my husband's knee to see (we were on a rug). I look forward to seeing it again.
I am not much of a film buff, but would this be called "anime". Even though it wasn't Japense, I thought it had a look of this sortof animation.

reply

No, it wouldn't be called anime at all. It's called "stop-motion animation". Think "Wallace & Gromit". The major difference is that this is the Eastern European version (ok, let's not get into debates about Eastern/Central - the point is that before the iron curtain fell, the animation of that part of Europe had its own direction, and stop motion was especially strong).

You can see some more clips from films like that over here:

Right, It's not anime. Just because its a cartoon without the disney name on it does not make it anime. Read a book sometime.

I've been teaching this peice to my first graders all month, and we have watched Disney's version like a billion times. This was such a fresh outlook on the story, and I really enjoyed the depth of Peter's character. I always thought of him as a silly little boy, but after seeing this film, I have completely changed my perspective. The animation was brilliant, and the mood fit the story so much better then the light hearted animated version.

I loved this film. The depth of the characters and the interaction with the musical score was amazing. I especially enjoyed the facial expressions which were far better than most stop-motion I've seen.

Beautifully crafted and as another has remarked the visuals follow the music completely. Each character felt real and I loved the detail to the house and the outside environment as much as the characters themselves.
