To me, I don't think its a boring movie at all. I love the humor, and the romanticism (I once read an interview of someone, and he mentioned you along the lines of "To Yasmin, love is all there is" and this is what rang through my mind as I watched the movie). I found some parts a bit saccharine though, but all in all, its almost perfect. My favorite part is the scene at the padi field where the 2 young lovers are playing kite - you could not hear the dialogue, it was shot from afar, and it was set against the sound of Nina Simone. Beautiful!

the dream squence of muskin, took my breath away.
The kiss which causes him to faint then float into the air.

reply

I sort of hate that kiss, because it symbolizes what Malay men want their wives to be: subservient to them.

reply

i just reminded me of my teenage crushes.

reply

I don't think that this symbolizes the subservientness the Malay men wants of their women. This is pure and innocent and full of love and if you want an example of real submissiveness in the movie, it is the part of the Vespa dude and pregnant woman neighbours. She cooks, she cleans, she bears him kids and all the thanks she get is of him having fun with another woman. And this doesn't happen only in the Malay community. I don't know if you are a Malay, a Chinese, an Indian, a Eurasian, an African, an English, the point is, males who are MCPs aren't only found in the Malay community. W

By the way, why do you think the Chinese women of the past bind their feet? They were submitting themselves to the male's idea of beauty.

What gives?

well - that relationship fell apart, it was very clear that he had a crush on her, but it wasn't very clear if she felt the same way. I read it as not, and she just saw him as a buddy. I enjoyed this dynamic relationship, rarely tackled in films. Anyway the floating scene perfected illustrated it.

reply

well, a lot of people thought... HE FLEW~! and it was a dream. OH. It's the finniest part.
