Origin of Sam

Does anyone have any idea from where the hell did Sam come(Yeah, hell is an option). Care to share some spooky stories...?

I'd like to think Sam was birthed in a pumpkin patch back in the early years of the Celts/Pagans. I think the more mysterious you keep it, the more ominous it truly is.

reply

Don't think Europe had pumpkins until Columbus brought them back from the New World.

Samhain originated In Ireland and turnips were used to carve scary faces to keep away the spirits which were free to roam on mischief night, they were a form of protection.when Irish immigrants came to the the United States, they brought their Customs with them and found using a Pumpkin was much easier to carve.

But I never said it would be in America (OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSNAP)

Why do people keep calling USA america ???? I dont get it, "America" is a continent, not a country, the name of the country is: "United States of America" not America, America occupies all the territory all the way from Argentina to Canada, again, it is a C-O-N-T-I-N-E-N-T !!!!!!

reply

Look up America in any dictionary - it can refer to the continents/land masses of the Western Hemisphere, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a single dictionary which does not also include The United States of America as one of the definitions for America.

I know it's been a few months but geeze, this one thing bugs the hell out of me.

The name if the continents are North America, South America, and Central America. I am from Canada. Nobody in Canada refers to ourselves as Amwricans. We are Canadians. We are also North Americans. I can only speak for my country, but I'm pretty sure that no other country on any if the three regions refer to themselves simply as Americans.

America is merely the shortened form of United States of America. Their citizens are referred to as Americans, not Unitedians or Statesians.

reply

This is a language difference, in english AMERICA refers to the USA, the continent is called "the americas" because in english it is not a single continent but 3.

In Spanish is different yes, "America" is the continent and we dumbly call the USA, "estados unidos" and their citizens "estadounidenses" despite the fact that USA is not the only country in the world with "estados unidos" in their official name.

Stop trying to forcefully change other's people language!

I think it is funny that the Fearnet shorts kind of show how Sam is born every year. I know the shorts might not be cannon or anything but I love them and you can kind of see how Sam comes back every year

This is not a sequel story actually but more of a behind the scenes of what went on in the first movie. So it definately contains spoilers for the first movie! The secret origin of Sam actually ties some characters together in new ways and explains some of the more questionable motivations.
Sam is the spirit of Halloween but he needs a physical body to walk in our world. His body is a reanimated human body fused with a pumpkin. Perhaps prior to Halloween night Sam or some other spirit possessess a human and tasks them with providing the human body Sam needs to rise.
The story that Macy tells about Kreeg killing the short bus kids because their parents got together and decided to pay Kreeg to do it never set well with me. I just took it as an example of how an urban legend grows into such ludicrous proportions through years of telling and retelling. But perhaps the young Kreeg was actually possessed and trying to provide a body for Sam. The body for next year needs to be obtained the previous year and buried in a pumpkin patch to be ready to rise on next Halloween night. Possibly Kreeg avoided punishment all those years for not honoring Halloween because he had provided Sam's body. But Kreeg grew to hate Halloween so much over the years the spirit moved next door.
Now we learn about a connection between Sam and Wilkins. In scenes we did not see before it is revealed that Sam wants Billy Wilkins body. Wilkins is trying to fight this compulsion to murder his son and tries offering up various other neighborhood children but ultimately Sam demands Billy. When Wilkins successfully fights the urge to kill his son they actually carve Charlie's head into a Jack O' Lantern just like Sam does to Emma at the end of the night. He then sets out to try and appease the Halloween spirit by offering as many virgin sacrifices as he can in an attempt to avoid punishment. Obviously it does not work and his punishment is delivered in the form of werewolf Laurie. That is why Sam just sits by and watches as the werewolves devour him even though he had appeared to have been following all of the rules of Halloween.
By the end of the night someone has to have buried a human body in the pumpkin patch for Sam to use next year. Was it the werewolves? Doubtful, not unless Sam wants a mutilated full grown male body next year. Maybe Henry becomes compelled to offer up Emma's body to apologize to the spirit of Halloween? Probably not, again Sam wants a small child sized body and Emma was his kill not an offering. Was it the short bus zombie kids? Perhaps they thanked Sam for assisting in their revenge by offering up the body of Chip, Schrader, Sara or Macy? We see Sam and Rhonda sharing a moment as she is leaving the quarry, maybe Sam was tasking her with providing the body at that time? Or it just might be Billy Wilkins after all. We see him dressed as his father at the end of the night, has he taken on the family business or rather curse?

Impressive. That's a creepy way to look at the whole story. May be they should make a prequel regarding Sam...

I'm just going to assume that the origin of Sam was in the word 'Samhain' and imagine that, due to his actions and the narrative of the film, he embodies the reasons why the 'laws' of the holiday must be followed or risk terrible results.

absolutely right!!! moonmonday ,totally agree with you

I'm sure he's been around since the middle ages and perhaps even further relating to the history of Halloween. I'm guessing he's was an ancient spirit/demon maybe Samhain himself that possessed a pumpkin in a pumpkin patch and took on his current form that is Sam. For all I know he was a turnip in the old days. I don't know, Sam and the Creeper from Jeepers Creepers have very ambiguous origins.

reply

As already stated he is the spirit of Halloween possibly a demon. I like how it is ambigous. Its his job to make sure people follow the rules of Halloween.
