Emily's American Voice

Was so irritating and high pitched! Oh my god, it was bizarre. I absolutely loved her british accent and deeper pitched voice in Devil Wears Prada and this didn't even sound like the same person. I can't believe switching to an American accent would cause that much change or do you think the entire voice was acted?

reply

I also thought it was a bit strange, and it is definately MUCH different from her english accent but I thought it fit her character. I think it was intentional though, because if you watch other movies where she has done an american accent it's usually not high pitched like that (the jane austen book club, wind chill, dan in real life, charlie wilson's war, and the great buck howard - basically every movie she's been in between 2007 and 2008) It still is relatively higher than normal but it isn't quite like her's in sunshine cleaning. Also, if you go to youtube and type in "sunshine cleaning b-roll" there are a few clips of her talking to the crew about how to do certain scenes and she continues to use her american accent yet it isnt like her character's (really high pitched, etc.) IMO, the shift of accents itself wasn't necessarily "acted" but the particular pitch and all was for the character.

reply

Her voice was also high pitched in the Jane Austen Book Club where she also had an American accent.

That is very interesting reading about Emily's american accent and British actor's American accents in general.I am from London and always thought that Emily does a very good American accent as opposed to the likes of Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins whose American accents sound terrible. I can not distinguish what part of America somebody comes from except those from New york and residents of Boston who sound very distinctive. What part of the U.S.A. does Emily's character sound like she comes from and is it authentic sounding? and can any American readers please tell me which British actors can authentically mimic your accents.

reply

Hugh Laurie does a good job. I didn't even know he's from Britain until I heard him present an award on the Emmy's (I think).

As for Blunt's accent, I don't really know. But I do know that it's not a southern accent for sure. Maybe the Inland North accent aka the closest one to General American. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that,on the other side of the debate, Renee Zellweger does a good British accent for Bridget jones.

Some may find the following of interest:

These comments come from the trivia for Bridget Jones's Diary

Renée Zellweger actually worked at a British publishing company for a month in preparation for the role. She adopted an alias as well as her posh accent and was apparently not recognized.

In order to make her English accent seem more natural, Renée Zellweger retained it on set even while not shooting. Hugh Grant once noted that he did not hear her speak in an American accent until the wrap party, after the film was completed, where he heard her speak "in a very strange voice" that he soon found out was her own natural tone.

While preparing for the role of Bridget, Renée Zellweger worked in a London office. On her desk in this office she kept a framed picture of then boyfriend Jim Carrey. Other office workers, who did not recognize her, found this to be odd, but never mentioned it to her for fear of embarrassing her.
So, apparently, the success of the actor's adoption of a correct accent can be dependent on the filmmakers' effort and expense in training the actor.

Kate Winslet does a great American accent as well. Her and Hugh Laurie are definitely the best.

Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it.

How about Jonny Lee Miller? Some didn't even recognize he was british.

Toni Collette does an amazing American accent too. Especially in the Sixth Sense. I never would have guessed she didn't sound like that in real life.

Damien Lewis and Lena Headey are Brits who do very good American accents.
Actually,I think there are quite a few Brit actors/actresses who can do good, sometimes fantastic,American accents! Some mentioned here by others who think they do terrible ones even.
And then there are the Australians, the Scots,Irish,Welsh and so forth, but that's another posting thread.

Kate Winslet has the greatest American accent among British actresses.

The movie was set in Albuquerque, which Google Maps tells me is in New Mexico. I caught that from the sign outside the blood centre, and took note of it because of Little Miss Sunshine.

She sounded pretty accent-neutral as far as American accents go. I noticed she and Amy Adams said pecan (peh-cahn') the way someone would say it in the Southwest U.S. (I say it the way they did and was raised in Las Vegas.) I used to work in a fruit and nut company with people from the Eastern US who would say "pee'-can" and I noticed the mother said it that way on her TV movie. I always notice that word for some reason. So then I thought they must have said it differently from their mom because she died when they were little. So maybe their dad had a different American accent and they learned it from him.

...the random things that come to one's mind.

Her accent was terrible, faded in and out dramatically.

I didn't think it was bad. You want to see a bad American accent -- watch Nicole Kidman in To Die For.

Off the top of my head good American accents by British actors:

Helena Bonham Carter in Fight Club
Claire Forlani in Meet Joe Black and The Last Time I Committed Suicide
Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I thought she was a little shaky in The Life of David Gale)
Jude Law
agreed- Johnny Lee Miller

Wow, I know I am 5 years late and by now, everyone is familiar with a variety of Emily's accent.

I follow Emily by default because of John Krasinski. I can only tell you, as an American, she can do about every dialect our country has. And very naturally.

If she is being interviewed, and is telling a story about an incident with someone, especially children, she goes into her "default" southern accent. Why, I have no idea.

reply

Yeah I found it quite noticable and unnatural, even though Ive only seen her in The Young Victoria before..

Emily does an American accent in the Jane Austin Book Club and a thriller called wind chill which wasn't very good. I think she did one in "Dan In Real Life" as well.

I just watched Sunshine Cleaning and I thought her accent was excellent (although I'm from the UK so maybe it's not compared to real American accents). I don't think it was high pitched. Amy Adams kind of a high pitched voice though. Maybe because they are playing sisters she tried to mimic Amy to make it more believable? My sister and I sound EXACTLY the same.

I have never seen The Great Buck Howard,is it any good? there is a wild rumour circulating around the U.K that Emily is going to play Carrie White in another remake of Carrie. I hope to God that this isn't true, nothing to do with Emily or her capabilities but Carrie just happens to be one of my favourite films and any kind of remake would be sacrilige. Sissy Spacek nailed that role bang on, nobody could better the 1976 version. Looking forward to seeing Emily in The Wolfman.

She's british? I thought she put on a british accent for devils wear prada. I thought this was her natural accent. She sounded so natural and sweet. I Had no problems with her voice.

GIALLO

I just came here to say that abher accent. She sounded SO different then Prada movie with her British, in this one she sounded American but like one who had a cold the entire movie. I gotta check out her other movies to see if she sounds like that during all her American accents.

was just wondering if anyone here has ever tried to seriously hold a different accent for a long period of time. its not easy. then to act with it. just tossing that out there

I thought her accent fit her character, it was a little rough around the edges. The worst American accent from a Brit that I've heard was Keira Knightley in The Jacket, it just sounded so fake.

Christian Bale does a great job with the american accent. I thought Emily's accent was perfect, I didnt notice any slip ups.

LOL. Bales accent is best when he's ripping the LD a new one.
I sort of focused on Emily's American accent a bit when I watched Sunshine last night and I didn't think it was that bad at all.
I think Daniel Day Lewis does a brilliant job using American accents.

In my opinion, Guy Pearce is one of the best actors in regards to changing an accent. Like in Memento, LA Confidential, Rules of Engagement and Factory Girl, etc,, The man is amazing.

reply

Watched this film for the first time Sunday night, loved it so much I bought the blu-ray and watched it again.
I thought Emily did an excellent job with her accent, and her chemistry with Amy Adams was so strong that at times I forgot they were acting and thought they really were sisters.

<<In my opinion, Guy Pearce is one of the best actors in regards to changing an accent.>>

Agreed. Very good actor, who isn't as recognized as he should be in my opinion.

British and Aussie actors/actresses are generally better at pulling off American accents than Americans are at doing British or Aussie....at least it seems that way to me.
