Great Movie, but could have done with some editing and some changes.

SPOILERS.

The lesbian character was not needed, nothing happened between her and Norah because Norah was not gay!

They didn't even become friends, so that scenario was completely useless, the movie could have used that storyline but made that character an Asexual male instead who becomes good friends with Norah.

The sex scene at the party was not needed, we already know that Norah is messed up way before that scene. However, it was obvious that the Filmmakers wanted to make it clear to the audience that Norah was straight, hence her sleeping with a man.

Norah wasn't gay, you're right. But it does give some insight into why the mother and daughter didn't speak anymore or why she absolutely refused to even have anything of her mom's.
Norah was under the impression that because she kept sentimental things, the other character probably would appreciate it.
Every character in this movie is well thought out. I'm not a fan of sex scenes either, and it was obvious Norah was straight when she made that face during the necklace scene but the other character was simply a lesbian because, well, that's just who she was.

The original script and the deleted scenes expand the Lynn subplot. Essentially in this version Norah may indeed be a lesbian (or at least bisexual) and she's definitely attracted to Lynn in some way. But even in the finished film it shows that Norah is deeply lonely and just wants companionship of some kind - since the sisters aren't exactly bosom buddies.
