Was he simply very depressed, or was he beginning to have Alzheimer's? I didn't know what to think, especially with the scattered newspapers and the neighbor complaining that he left the tub running. And he went to work, after he was told that his card expired.

It's not Alzheimer's -- his wife is either dead or gone, and his depression is causing him to have delusions, alternating with severe bouts of depressions (hence the suicide attempt). He's trying to return to a past in which his wife is alive/present.
shareyes, that's it! his wife is dead... i was reading another post where some person made a remark that dito's wife prob died on 9/11 because he was glancing over the Brooklyn bridge.... the twin towers where behind it
