I'd like for it to be a cross, in tone, with Castle of Cagliostro, Island of Assassins, and Tokyo Crisis...with a dash of insanity ala Mystery of Mamo. Not too 'badass', not too humorous. It should have awesome fight/chase scenes, but it needs to be balanced out with good comedic timing.
Not sure who could pull off directing this movie well.... Er. Wachowski Brothers? Edgar Wright?
Well, with Lupin there have been two styles (although both have combined occasionally):
NOIR Lupin - this is how Lupin started out by creator Monkey Punch: the stories were more realistic and crime-oriented and focused on Lupin planning out heists, encountering and taking care of criminals in his way/out to get him, and evading a grimly tenacious Zenigata - sometimes all at once.
Lupin himself is a little more devious and self-serving: more willing to kill people to achieve his own ends, and more than often will do a cruel trick to infuriate/frustrate his foes, particularly Zenigata.
His friends are also liable to doubledealing, Goemon and Fujiko most likely. In fact Goemon was a mercenary originally out to kill Lupin in the manga.
This sort of Lupin was in the 1971 and 2012 series and the original manga by Monkey Punch. It didn't become too popular till sometime recently, when people started seeing the appeal in an anti-heroic, less likable Lupin.
ADVENTURE Lupin - this is what Hayao Miyazaki reinvented Lupin into: a over-the-top Robin Hood archetype, a thief with a heart of gold and a love for adventure who seems to wander into incidents that require him to intervene and set things right: a global threat, a dastardly scheme, and most commonly a damsel/child in distress.
Lupin, and in fact all his cronies and Zenigata, are softer and more willing to put aside their "normal business" (they're mostly zany tricksters in this regard) to work together and assist the "victim" and take down the big bad.
This is the more popular, and perhaps more interesting version of Lupin, being present in most TV/Movies media.
As to this film, it appears it's going to be Lupin vs Zenigata, in which case it looks like it's going to be NOIR Lupin, but I hope there'll be a bit of ADVENTURE Lupin thrown in to make it more appealing and interesting.

1. Shows the bad guys as horrendous butchers, a great polar opposite from the Lupin Gang.
2. Reveals Lupin's appreciation for Zenigata being in his life. Regard and respect.
3. I of A, above other Lupin works, shows the gang as one step ahead of any contestant.
4. I of A presents Lupin's brilliance at detective work, impersonation, operation of complex equipment, etc. When he says he'll invent his own cure for the poison, you don't doubt he can.
5. Note the gang's sensitive nature with the death of Ellen.
6. As well, I of A presents not very often seen action when Lupin is attacked during his first meeting with his assassin compatriots, all of whom seem much bulkier, tougher and not hesitant to kill with conviction.
