How similar is this to Doctor Who?

Hi everyone, I just finished binge watching all 8 of the new Doctor Who seasons and really enjoyed them, so I was wondering if this show is similar and would be a good show to watch next, or if it is completely different. I didn't want to read too many forum threads and risk seeing spoilers so I apologize if this question has been asked already. Thanks.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is an official BBC spin-off from Doctor Who featuring a former companion of the Doctor battling alien threats to Earth. Some of the alien races that appear in SJA have also appeared in Doctor Who such as the Sontarans. K-9 appears in some episodes. The Doctor himself appears in a couple of episodes. Sarah has a Sonic screwdriver-esque gadget. So yes, it is pretty similar to Doctor Who in some respects.

The major differences are that Sarah and co don't have a TARDIS like craft that they can travel back and forth through time in, travel to alien worlds etc. the series is Earth-based (though they do travel in time in a few episodes - just not via a TARDIS). The series is aimed more at the teen audience, so you do get some storyline elements that are aimed at that audience - one teen character having a crush on another teen character, characters dealing with family problems etc. But the show has a pretty broad appeal and plenty of adult viewers enjoy it.

Like any TV series there are some episodes that are better than others, but overall the series is pretty entertaining. Why not watch a couple of episodes and see if you like it?

It has the Doctor Who as its an official spin off. It is aimed at a younger audience and has a lower budget.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is mostly aimed at kids. It's about a former companion from the original Doctor Who series named Sarah Jane Smith, who's probably the most well known companion from the original DW. She has adventures with her alien son, Luke, and his school friends. There are recurring aliens and characters from both the original DW & the new series like K-9, the Doctor himself (the 10th & 11th versions), Jo Grant (another companion from the original series), Sontarans, and Judoon for example. It's a pretty good kids show. I really liked it myself.

SJA is a great show. To me SJA feels a bit more like Classic Who and is aimed at a slightly younger audience than NuWho. I enjoy it and own the whole series.
