Actually liked it!

Am I the only person out there who actually thinks this programme is funny? I haven't laughed out loud at a programme in so long. Even though it is obvious the direction the show is going to go in, I think it's a great comedy and I think Lee Mack's character is hilarious. But then again I thought The Sketch Show was hilarious as well.

lisaconway946-1- By the way you wrote "Actually liked it" it looked like you shouldn't be liking this because;

It rips off of the worst US sit-coms tendancies to base it around wooden actors spouting one-liner wise cracks (including those intervals showing cool buildings when changing scenes).

Its on BBC1 on a Friday so it must be crap.

But so what, I too laughed a lot as Lee Mack is an extremly funny comic performer. I haven't seen his stand-up so it is all fresh to me.

A funny stand-up also does not always make a great sit-com performer but Lee Mack is and reminded of the greats like Leonard Rossiter

I wasn't meaning that. I was meaning the fact that the other posters on here seemed to think it was a bit rubbish. But I'm glad someone else likes this apart from me. :-)

i like it too, the whole thing is just joke after joke, and normally that would get to me, but the jokes are too funny for me to care!

What's that? You just called me a bastard didn't you!

reply

yes, and i for one love the characters as well. i sometimes am like that, if i'm in a funny mood... joke after joke after joke. so i appreciate it a lot!

one thing that i also like is that they sometimes just give you a hint of what the joke would be and you'll still laugh, like "now, don't do a joke about me exposing myself"!

I found both the first series plus the first two episodes so far of the second series absolutely hilarious! It's my kind of humour - very dry, witty and easily repeatable in mixed company. There's not much I watch on TV these days - I can't abide these so-called reality shows, and talent(less) shows - but a decent comedy like this is really a breath of fresh air. I hope there will be a third series after this one!!!

reply

I also like the show.:)

The only problem I have with it is that I only find half the jokes funny. Doesn't matter that much though, considering the sheer amount of jokes in each episode.

reply

Great show - i hope it gets a second series. Lee Mack is fantastic live if you get chance to see him. Failing that, his dvd is out next month! :)

reply

Really enjoyed tonights episode cant believe anyone thinks its rubbish.

" I've told you before, if you're gonna eat all the cake use your hands"

Funny enough and good enough for me.

reply

I really love this show too! Last night's was the best, I was laughing so much at some bits, especially that line ^ hehe.

I thought it was brilliant!

it's true that the plot's are quite thing and have been done before, but when the jokes are this good it doesn't really matter!

>> Lee Mack is and reminded of the greats like Leonard Rossiter <<

I have to agree there, his delivery does at times remind me old Rigsby. I do think Lee Mack looks an awful lot like Robert De Niro as well!

reply

I think its fantastic, not many decent british sit coms around at the moment but this is really funny. So what if its just Lee Mack saying one liners. It has me laughing throughout and I would be willing to buy this on dvd. Believe me they have to be good for me to do that.

reply

Robert de Niro? You should've gone to Specsavers.

To realise that (amazingly) British situation "comedies" have sunk even lower than I could have imagined. Perhaps it's something to do with global warming, I just can't think how any moderately sentient human beings could allow him/her/itself to be associated with something so absolutely pathetic and totally humour-free.

reply

Hey its not that bad actally some of its pretty funny. Yes some of its quite cliche but at least its something different rather than endless re runs of "Only Fools and Horses" (love it but give it a break sometimes and it very much went down hill at the end) or yet another series of My Family or My Hero or reality TV dance thingy etc. I mean I wouldn't say in for it/record it but if you're around its a pretty harmless way to pass a Friday night.

reply

I thought it was pretty good. It is very well written and it deserves credibility for being able to follow Have I Got News For You.

First time I'd seen it on Friday & thought it was decent enough, whereas most new sitcoms have me reaching for the remote. Admittedly the presence of Megan Dodds certainly helped to keep me watching !.

Wasn't too sure about this show at first, but Megan kept me watching... and I grew to like the rest of it as well.

It's overwritten. Which is a refreshing change, really.

Sorry, I just tried another 5 minutes. Is this stuff written down in advance? Or do they just make it up as they go? Anyway, I'm happy to watch Mitchell and Webb and the new Seinfeld Season (7) is released in a week or so. (Oh. my god, was there just a joke (??) about "lesbian brocolli"? - I like brocolli.)

i loved the line : i always get 8 and 9 mixed up, thats why i can never say no to a german woman.

great stuff

Yeah I love this show too. You can never win. Most sitcoms are embarrassingly unfunny like "My Family", "shane", "The IT Crowd" and because most people have seen them 247 times "Only Fools..." isn't that funny anymore. It hasn't aged especially well. Anyway, My point is I cannot believe people do not like this show because there are too many jokes. I watch sitcoms to laugh. If they bring in other things I care about then great but that is the priority of a comedy show. Have Laughs and this has one every few seconds. I miss a few of them because I am laughing too hard and THAT to me is a sign of an excellent Sitcom (avoiding using the word great...)

So to all these people who think it is possible for a sitcom to be too funny or have too many jokes then I think you are missing the point. It is situation comedy. They are in a situation. And it makes you laugh.

Fave line:

"I think you are missing the elephant in the room"

*Lee looks confused

"It's an idiom"

"are they the ones with big ears or small ears?"

well I guess it's how you tell em...

reply

The plot may be predictable and the acting a bit wooden (didn't they say the same about early seinfeld) but I really enjoy this show and it links up two of my favourite shows on friday night HIGNFY and QI.

reply

I think its awesome, its quick and your getting a one liner a minute. The best one I thought was:

"Can we talk?"

"About what?"

"About us?"

"There's no us?"

"Ok can we talk about you and me?"

"There's no you and me?"

"Ok lets talk about 'business like show business'"

"There's no business like show bus...."
