Good low-budget film

I caught this film this morning while channel surfing, looking for something to put me to sleep after a night of gouty arthritis. I kept changing channels looking for something in the horror genre that wouldn't be too gory or loud. I saw Elizabeth Rohm and immediately stopped looking, enjoying her work since she played Kate on Angel.

I wound up completely engrossed, and forced myself to stay awake. Got that jangly headachey type thing you get when you push yourself with a novel or a movie because you just can't let it go. I could have DVR'd it, but no. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly.

So I went to mrqe.com to look for reviews, because I'd never heard of the film. No reviews, but they directed me to imdb.com. Was quite delighted to see this board, discover that the movie was made by a St. Louis native, and had to leave a few comments.

First, the acting. Solid all around. Elizabeth Rohm always does a good job, but the surrounding cast was right on the mark. I particularly liked the woman who played the homicide detective, and intend to look her up after I finish writing this. Ditto the guy who played her partner. They seemed like they stepped out of an episode of Law and Order (that's a compliment). Realistic but human. No-nonsense.

The protagonist's friends (esp. the lawyer) acted like a bunch of twenty-something, thirty-somethings would act, and even when the big reveal came I found myself touched by the murderer's remorse and the way the murderer did not suddenly turn into a cold-hearted, malevolent being hiding behind an innocuous exterior. The interior matched the exterior, and so the reveal was plausible.

The ghostly aspect of the film drew me in. Seldom has a protagonist had a sadder back history in a film like this. I liked the heart behind the back story.

All in all, what this story had that I liked was a view of human nature that insists that yes, we are flawed and mess up, sometimes horribly, but there is hope because there is love. I'm sure there are people who would find the ending a bit over the top, and ambiguous in terms of how we should feel about the resolution of the protagonist's problems. But I found it satisfying.

I rarely see ghost stories that I like. Thanks.

I, too, generally don't care for the supernatural type films but this one drew me in. Every now and then I come across a good low-budget movie that I've never heard of before and this was definitely one of those.
