Original vs. dubbed version

I have seen the portuguese version (with subtitles) and I heard there is also a dubbed English version out. Has anybody seen it? My assumption is it isn't very good.

But just out of interest, has anybody seen both versions and do they differ?

I've also only seen the original version but my experience with dubbing is that it normally lowers the quality of the experience. Luckily I'm from a country that doesn't use dubbing except from children's programs, but every time I visit for instance Germany I just can't believe how they can even accept having to watch foreign films and TV shows not hearing the voices of the original actors. For me it's like taking half of their personalities away.

Regarding Tropa de Elite I think it would be totally impossible to make the same impression on the audience using a different language from the original. Even if I hardly understand a word of the spoken dialogue and have to rely on the subtitles to follow it the sound and "melody" of the Portuguese/Brazilian is a key part of the experience for me.

I now actually saw a little bit of the dubbed English version and yes, it is not good. Nascimento's voice in the original is quite chilling and the dubbing doesn't capture the atmosphere of the movie.

I agree with you dubbing in general is not a good idea. I should know, I am German. :)

If you go on youtube there are several scenes from the dubbed version and they're all awful.
There is almost no background noise and the actors deliver their lines like they're in a bad video game.

Ive watched the two films, both with either portuguese subs or none at all.

And I have to say that the dubbed version looks like you are watching a series of cut-scenes from an old low-budget computer game. It's absolutely terrible, lacks all the gritty/brutal feeling and so much much more.

I normally prefer movies in original language but it is true you will always lose some of the cinematography and the visual expression by reading the titles.. And it as really awful with this one in particular as often the narrator is talking at the same time as the heroes on screen.

I saw the Italian dub and it was phenomenal.

Not all dubbings are bad,,,

"Hey you smokin Mother Nature, this is a bust!"-The Who
"The Legend will Never Die!"-Soul Calibur

I have seen only the dubbed version. It was terrible. It was basically one long droning monologue of a voice-over by the main character, with some pictures moving around in the background. Hope the Portuguese version wasn't like this.
