The CGI was surprisingly awful

The animation was great, but any shots that had CGI in it looked totally out of place. If I had to see a shiny-rainbow-effect one more time I would have ripped my eyes out.

The original series handled the special effects much better.

I disagree. I actually have a hard time watching the battle with Sahaquiel in the original Anime now because it pales in comparison to how Rebuild reworked it. I did think the CGI was distracting in some places (like the objects the characters interact with, for example the booth Misato was using to descend to headquarters) but overall, I think it added to the movie.

And yeah, the rainbow was corny, but hey, what the hell?

I thought it worked well.

Disagree completely, I thought the combination of CGI and more traditional animation resulted in one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen.

Agree.

The movie looked fantastic to me. Period.

"This is the end of the world. So where do you want to die? Here or in a Jaeger?"

I thought the CGI blended seamlessly with the rest of the animation. I could see if you were talking about the building shots in the old Spider-Man cartoon on Fox but the CGI in this was anything but awful.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I generally don't like when CGI and hand drawn animation are combined.
