God I hate Asuka.

That bitch single-handedly ruined the entire film for me. She starts out completely and utterly repelent, and this continues until the very end of her screen-time. But even when she starts to grow up, the fact remains that she's used as a conduit for about 70% of the movie's fanservice (I know I'm exagerrating, but still...); the crown jewel of all of this is that RIDICULOUS test plug-suit. Why the F#@K would they have something like that even made? Honestly, that scene where she opens her heart and soul to Misato is impossible to take seriously, thanks to that suit.

Rarely do I ever have such a strong, uncontrollable urge to whack a cartoon character in the face with a brick, no matter how much I dislike them. Even when Gendo does the world a service and orders her to be ground into little-bitty c#@t meatballs, she STILL survives.

So, to sum it all up, I hate Captain Shikinami to the point where the very sight of her stresses my hump.

That's my two cents, anyway.

are you new to the series? Asuka is my favorite. I'm assuming you must be a fan of Shinji and Rei and while I like them too Asuka is a much more entertaining character and on a more realistic level I like how she doesn't deal with her parent issuesby becoming a speechless poet like Rei or an overly emotional whiner like Shinji.

as for complaining about the revealing plugsuit come one, this is anime, naked teengirls is its calling card

reply

With respect to your opinion, I personally thought that Asuka's constant abrasive attitude made her about as entertaining(and as likable)as stomach flu.

I can't really say that I like Shinji, either. Throughout this movie, he's portrayed as the equivalent of a wimpy harem lead who's the butt of every lame joke.

That's why most animes aren't for me. In all honesty, I can tolerate fanservice in small doses (in some cases, it's even refreshing). But I sometimes feel that it can be taken to extremes, especially if it gets in the way of a scene that's meant to be serious (such as the one I mentioned before).

reply

so do you like Misato? I consider Shinji Misato and Asuka the main characters, disliking 2 of 3 must make it a bitter series to sit through

listen to the receiving end of sirens.

reply

I dislike Asuka as well. This series has a lot more characters then ust these 3 to enjoy.

reply

Honestly, I liked Asuka in the original series. She still had an abrasive attitude, but could also be happy and cheerful at times. Also, the original series explained why Asuka acted the way she did. In the rebuilds however, she was nothing more than a childish brat. I remember listening to an audio commentary that had the movie audio in the background, and I can distinctly remember thinking "Wow, I really hate Asuka!" The rebuilds took away all of the emotional context for most of the characters (except maybe Shinji) so Asuka just came across as an annoying brat.

reply

I'm guessing you haven't seen the original series/EoE.

reply

I love Asuka!

reply

Lol, hey OP, if Asuka existed in real life she'd probably hate you too.

She's a tsundere.

reply

Heh, if she were real, I'd be much happier not to even know she DID exist.

reply

if she was real, people would like her more than a boring, real life Rei

reply

Really? I doubt that most people would find much to like about somebody who avidly avoids everyone else, and acts like she's pissed off at the world every time she opens her mouth.

I don't think that's necessarily true.

See: Firefly with River Tam.

reply

After reading your post, my reaction to you is similar to your reaction to Asuka. =P

reply

It makes no difference to me. You're free to your opinion, and I respect that.

reply

Oh my, how very noble of you.

reply

Not sure what's wrong with the suit or what it has to do with the other scene. I think she is the most interesting character next to Mari.

reply

Mari isn't that interesting as of yet. I guess she's kind of a mystery, but she has almost no character development. But she does seem... different...

reply

To the OP...*SPOILERS*

...given that Mari landed boob-first into Shinji's face, and the fact that he got a bird's eye view of la la land when she bent over, I wouldn't say that Asuka got all the fan service. Asuka is what she is. It's important the storyline retain her as the person who yearns to be liked, but doesn't show open appreciation for the things that she has.

reply

Am I the only one who was hoping they would get someone other then Tiffany Grant to be Asuka? She cannot do a young enough voice and I just find it distracting that Asuka sounds older then Misato.

reply

Well I loved Asuka. She's the only thing I liked about Eva to begin with.
