Why did duchess Rowena make all of the princesses wear those plain grey dresses. I thought that princesses had to wear beautiful gowns back then

Its sorta like uniform.. since shes moving in and teaching them everything.

It was probably a discipline thing. Having rags instead of glamorous gowns is a way of bringing the princesses more down to earth and teach some humility.
