Alex's accent missing!

In "The Mummy Returns" Alex has a British accent which makes sence because he lives in London. But in "The Mummy 3" he sounds very western(I won't say American because the actor is from Cananda) but he would have still lived in London.
Just another sloppy detail in this movie.

reply

Does it really need to be said??

If they can:

fight mummies for the 3rd go round

see people die & come back to life

escape harm from repeatedly from all weapons

have Alex's mother look like a totally different woman & no one mentions it

............then he can drop an English accent!

"Today is the tomorrow you were worrying about yesterday!"

reply

No offense to the actor but I don't really like the rebellious Alex. In mummy 2, Alex was smart... and, good, (at least to his parents) and... Oh I don't know, I just don't like this Alex. It's like they're two totally different people...

Plus this movie is ruined by not using the original cast. The last 2 mummy movies are based in Egypt, now China? By the way they are not mummies!!

Anyway, even though I don't like the movie that much, I really like Jonathan, Funny character, gotta love him.

By the way, I'm from Hong Kong. Seriously.

reply

Why are they not mummies?

Mummified corpses have been found all over the world.

reply

Because they never went through a "mummification" process.

The Dragon Emperor himself is just a corpse inside a terra cotta shell. And the corpses underneath the Great Wall likewise aren't mummies. Really, all these walking undead are "zombies".

Made you look.

We had five actors played 007 over the years and it wasn't questioned.
Four actors played Batman ditto.

It's only a movie.

How about on "Fresh Prince" when a different actress played the mother the last couple of seasons and how fast the new baby grew up?

actually everybody questioned the fresh prince one...well I know most African Americans did who watched the show and all will tell you the 1st aunt viv was way better lol

reply

everyone questioned the change of Aunt Viv it was actually a pretty big story for the entertainment gossip back then; especially the reason why the original actress was canned

and everyone questions the new 007s and they're always compared to Sean Connery

with Batman too but to a lesser extent since everyone other than Keaton was a joke even their films until Bale came along

reply

Erm, people do tend to lose their accents as they grow older and live in a different place. I know a British person who is just starting to lose a bit of his accent and has been here in Canada for 7 months.

Accents might change after awhile but not that much. He sounded completely North American. Even if he had spent time there he would not sound that way. He either would continue to sound English or there would be a strange mix.

Besides he does not seem to have spent much time there at all anyway. Mostly in England and other locations like China.

It was laziness on the producers part and annoying. It stopped me warming to the character because he did not seem the grown up boy from the second movie.

If im honest I actually prefer him sounding Generically North American, than Generically English.

But perhaps they should give him a regional accent in the next one, make him a scouser for laughs. Or even someone from a place like Louisiana.

Incorrect. My sister was born and raised in Upstate New York, yet after spending a few years in the south, you'd swear she'd never been up north once. Accents can and will change (sometimes dramatically) over time depending on the person.

And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?

reply

But in this he does not seem to have spent much time at all in America and was in China awhile so should he have a Chinese accent by that logic?

And very few peoples accent change that dramatically. There are Americans who have lived over here in England for years, even decades and either have a strange mix or have not lost their accent a tall.

What are you basing this on? This movie takes place nearly 15 years after the last film... we don't know what's gone on since then, where Alex went to school, where he's spent his time, etc. His parents both have different accents, so isn't it possible his changed over time? Heck, it's not even that uncommon for people to speak with different accents than their native ones. Look at John Barrowman- he's Scottish, but speaks with an American accent etc.

The whole "OMG-zers! This film sucks-orz because ALEX's accent is soooooooo stupid!!!!!!! LOLZERS?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!" argument is so played out...

and was in China awhile so should he have a Chinese accent by that logic?

Again, what are you basing this on? He's been in China for a while, but there's a difference between having an American accent and an American father, and likely having spent a great deal of time... IN America, and spending a few months in China and suddenly spurting a Chinese accent.

Alex having an American accent is possible and logical.

I don't understand the complaint.

reply

Actually, John Barrowman was raised in the US (in Illinois). If you listen to him on regular chat shows... like when he was on Jonathan Ross, his accent is naturally American. He has stated that he can mimic a Scottish accent very well because of his parents.

reply

Johns natural accent is Scottish, he learnt to put on an American accent as a way of stopping the local kids making fun of him. He uses the American accent as his everyday accent but when in the company of his parents/family he reverts to his natural Scottish accent.

Oh really? I met a guy in the army who was born in Queens NY and yet he picked up a deep southern accent while stationed down there

The movie was pretty bad. The fact they Rachel Weise decided not to be in this movie due to the bad script makes sense. The only reason Brendan Fraser is in it is because he had a 3 movie deal with the studio. Otherwise, I'm sure he would have passed on it. Let's hope the series has died now. I was shocked at how much this movie made (over $400 million worldwide) even though it cost over $145 million. I liked Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in it. At least they made the movie interesting and fun at time.

reply

Aren't they signed on to do 2 more movies?

As for the accent. I live in Mass but when I went to go live with my father for a year in NC, all it took was a few months before I started slipping with words and sounding southern.

I would have preferred Alex to keep his British accent because I personally think it sounds cooler but it didn't make the movie any better so I could care less. It's one thing to replace Eve but to replace Alex as well. The movie just wasn't good. The chemistry was gone between those characters. The only thing good about it was Jonathan.

reply

He has an accent - Australian because that's where he's from, not Canada. I found the bad accent awful because the Australian kind of popped out and then he tried to cover it and sounded like a bad Brooklyn accent. There was no chemistry between the "family" except for Rick and Johnathan and the movie was a huge disappointment. I really loved the first two but this one is not very good. I always laugh when I see Jet Li in a movie - remember how "Fearless" was his last movie?

The accent switch was badly done, but even worse is just how poorly spoken Luke Ford is. He could barely string 2 words together. Where as Freddie Boath as Alex in the 2nd film has a much clearer and more pronounced voice. The producers really fooked up this one.

reply

You also have to consider that Alex's parents are rich - they live in a stately home - and even if they had sent Alex to be educated in America (which hardly anyone did from that class and place in the 1930s) he would surely have gone to an expensive elite private school followed by an East Coast Ivy League College and if he lost his accent at all would have ended up sounding like an old-fashioned upper class American (think Franklin Roosevelt, the Kennedys, the first President Bush or a 1930s or 1940s newsreel voiceover - or for those of you who none of that means a thing The Simpsons' Mayor Quimby).

The casting of a handsome Australian playing an American who has all the charm and intelligence of Hayden Christiansen's Anakin Skywalker is with Rachel Weisz's refusal to take part however many barrowloads of money they offered her the primary reasons this film is a disaster.

Lol @ "Western"

I always assumed it was something carried over from the cartoon series. In the cartoon, Alex is about the same age he was in the second movie but his British accent is gone and is replaced with an American one.

I believe Randy Orton is the love child of Freddy Kruger and Pee Wee Herman!
