Can someone explain the ending to me?

I'm confused by the ending of this film. Is he dying or becoming human or what? Because isn't committing suicide against the rules? I'm not sure what he's hoping to accomplish/understand. If anyone could help explain this I'd be grateful. Thanks!

I've wondered the same thing. The ending made no sense.

He was becoming human. Think like the movie City of Angels.

The ending was a little confusing but I think Gabriel was headed back to Heaven. He stated the last thing angels feel was the sensation of falling and I believe this is the medium unto which an angel goes back to where he/she came from. The part which I felt was a little confusing is where he was having difficulty with the human feeling of sorrow in that he had killed his best friend Michael. This I thought may lead him to having complete empathy for humans and may want to be one that God loves the most(being human) but I tink the last part cements my view of him going back to heaven as he was the strongest and most staunch arc in the end and he would not betray his father.

reply

Actually, one thing he stated earlier (with "Jade"/Amitiel) was that he wouldn't remember anything about what happened because after missions Angels forget everything.

At the end of the film, Gabriel says that he wants to find out what happened to the angels and how Purgatory got into the state it did. The only way to do that would be to "Fall" and remain human so he wouldn't forget everything and also keep an eye on things.

.. and I think he wanted to stay with Amitiel and not forget about her, either..

He didn't go to Heaven BUT, by removing all the Fallen, he WAS able to bring the Dawn.

I agree with sirvaun. It took me a while to come up with a solution that didn't drive me crazy. I think Gabriel is choosing to become human, in the same way that Jade did when she was defeated by Michael/Sammael (sp). He makes a comment about not wanting to forget, and looks skyward to ask for forgiveness just before literally falling off the building. He also makes a comment about hoping to see "you" again. I assume he is referring to God. If he is becoming human, then this is possible. Earlier in the movie, we learn that fallen angels who die in Purgatory remain dead. But, those angels who become human and then die in Purgatory can return to heaven as a soul, just like any other human.

reply

I think you two got it right, but it made no sense to me because all he had to do was return to heaven and all the angels would be restored. I liked the movie, but that the ending to me was just weak and made no sense.

reply

Becoming human doesn't add up. If he fell off the building, that's it, he's dead. So much for seeing Amitiel. It seems that he went to heaven, because he had the sensation of falling.

reply

Gabriel also said that he had seen so much that he felt he couldn't go back and there would eventually be new arcs anyway. this was before he fell.

He became human. By FALLING off the building he gave up his wings. Angels have wings and can fly. He said "the last thing an angel feels is falling", and that's because they give up their wings and can no longer fly. Also, when a human is killed in purgatory they either go to heaven or hell. If the Fallen are in control the soul goes to hell. If the Light is in control the soul goes to heaven. Purgatory is where a soul goes if their is no clear cut decision on where it should go. Purgatory is like limbo.

You`re going by The Lore ! BIG Mistake ! The Film`s Universe uses Different Rules than The Traditional Church Dogma ! Uriel says to Gabriel " They never told us what to expect , nothing could`ve prepared us for this place ! YOU KNOW WHAT WE`VE FOUND OUT ! YOU DIE HERE , YOU DON`T F__ING COME BACK ! EVER ! EVEN THE SOUL DIES ! You understand ? "

reply

Um , actually when Gabriel confronted the corrupted Michael about" forcing Amitiel to give up her wings " Michael said " Sammael did that , not me ! " This may have been part of the reason Michael killed Sammael in a blind rage and later after living in " The City " for a long period of time and seeing the uglier side of The Humans he`d been taught to love ( prejudice , sexual deviance etc. ), went completely insane associating " sin" with " freedom " and became Sammael`s Replacement as The Fallen`s Leader ! The corrupted Michael and Sammael are actually separate characters with the real Sammael having been killed by Michael centuries prior ! Dwaine Stevenson`s only credited as " Sammael " to keep The Film`s Twist a secret !

reply

Um , Amitiel was defeated and depowered by The TRUE Sammael ! This is revealed in Gabriel`s Confrontation with The Corrupted Michael :
Gabriel : You killed Raphael , Ithuriel and The Others ! They were our Brothers and you killed them !
Michael : They were weak !
Gabriel : You clipped Amitiel`s Wings !
Michael : Sammael did that , NOT me !

At the end of the film, Gabriel falls from grace to become a human where he will now stay in purgatory. During his final speech he says "You threw me far from Grace and now I fall unto it." In the Australian theatrical version of the film, there was an extended ending that showed him returning to Jade in the loft. He no longer had the tattoos and his eyes were brown.

reply

Yes, the original version, the Australian theatrical version of the film, is much clearer and shows him choosing to become human. The US version is more ambiguous because TPTB wanted to leave the door open for a trilogy:

I bought the DVD off an Australian DVD website HOPING to see this ending - it wasn't on it. I tried fast-forwarding through the end credits, watched the special features and deleted scenes and nothing. Oh well.

Hello,
The answer to the riddle that is Gabriel's fate may be learned by listening to the soundtrack, the second to last track entitled "Falling Pt II" a dialogue track that may be enjoyed anywhere that the soundtrack is available for purchase.

The track, a line of dialogue that unfortunately is not available on the US DVD goes as follows:

"Falling is the last thing an angel feels. A distant voice still echoes inside my head, but for the first time it is my own. I am no longer chosen to walk amongst these people, because I now choose to walk WITH them. This will always be a place where angels fear to tread."

From this passage, I believe we may conclusively deduce that he was in fact granted his humanity.

Hope this clarifies.

Still, a fantastic movie

PS: For those who remain curious, the alternative (and in my opinion, the true) ending to Gabriel may be found as a video for those who have the time to search for it. Please post on this thread if there are any further questions. :)

The thing that confuses me the most is how he turns into a human by dying... earlier Jade said that if you die as an angel then that's it, you don't go anywhere. Is it just that by jumping he's saying he wants to die as a human? If that's the case then I think the problem is you don't see him lose his wings. He just falls over the side, and you still think he's an angel... I'm confused >_<

reply

Well , we DON`T see ANY Wings in The Film OTHER THAN The Angelic Tattoos ! Presumably , this was deliberate to keep The Film somewhat grounded !

for who are curious:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGV2ye3LJ2w

it is the raw version (before editing and cgi, imagine that there's raining outside - no green screen)

it is not an alternate ending, just an extended "explanation" of Gabriel choice of becoming human.

amazing film! see also Der Himmel über Berlin (1987) too.

reply

In the cinematic version, the scene at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGV2ye3LJ2w shows after the credits but for some reason this did not make it to the dvd.
But it is the intended ending: Gabriel's fall is meant to be like Seth's fall from grace to become human in City of Angels.
Gabriel becomes human and reunites with Jade.

The End.

Now it should not be so confusing.

reply

A number of things I've read online make the case that he is actually becoming a Fallen, which makes sense in a way especially when he talks about new Arcs and new Fallen that will come.
