Sammael confusion?

MY UNDERstanding is that each side had 7 warriors
but im confused about sammael , the movie makes it look like he was originally part of the 7 good archs - i think there were several such clues, but the only one i remeber was the speech to asmodeus and lilith and then when litlith said she shouldnt have trusted him
-however, i guess she was talking to micheal at that point
so was sammael an original fallen, or a turned fallen like micheal

reply

Or was the new identity a kind of a schisophrenic entity - being Sammael and Michael at the same time?

reply

one other thing i note, the archs all have similar names that end in el, including sammel, while the fallen names have no similarities

reply

"El" means "God" , and som names containing "el" signify a connection (a positive one) to God. Each name containing "el" has a meaning reflecting this special relation to God. Also names of people contain this "el", e.g. the name Eleanor comes from Arabic Elinor,or El-i-nor = "Go is my Light".

I have just found an interesting passage in Wikipedia:
"According to rabbinic Jewish tradition, Michael acted as the advocate of Israel, and sometimes had to fight with the princes of the other nations (cf. Daniel 10:13) and particularly with the angel Samael, Israel's accuser. Michael's enmity with Samael dates from the time when the latter was thrown down from heaven. Samael took hold of the wings of Michael, whom he wished to bring down with him in his fall; but Michael was saved by God (Midrash Pirke R. El. xxvi.)."

I suppose this could have inspired the author/director of this movie....

When watching the movie I assumed that when the archangels entered Purgatory they were placed inside someone who was already living in that plane as opposed to being reborn as a human. Under that assumption, my interpretation of the "Sammael-is-Michael" story arc was that Michael, being the strongest of all the arcs likely also carried the greatest expectation of victory. So, contrary to how the other Arcs may have been sent to Purgatory (to live, one assumes, in the body of a plain human) Michael was placed inside Sammael's form. After all, what better way to conquer the enemy but to plant a mole with the ability to rule them?

Unfortunately, Michael proved to be no more infallible than the rest and succumbed to the darkness within (or however you'd like to put it) thus becoming the leader of the Fallen, rather than the fulfilling his role as the champion of God. That explained the gradual decline in Raphael's (and the other Arcs') ability to sense him after his arrival.

reply

Michael killed Sammael and took over the fallen when he got to purgatory. He just used the name Sammael as an alias.

reply

wow ya'll need to pay better attention, none of the fallen ever call Michael Sammael, they always call him boss, or something else, only the Arch's believe he's Sammael because they never saw Michael, they just assumed he died.

Spoilers

So here's what happened for all you lay people, Sammael was the leader of the fallen, Michael fought him and won but in doing so he tapped into the hate that Gabriel felt when he killed Asmodeus, however Michael couldn't fight it, he turned to it allowing it to strengthen him and give him power, He took control of the fallen so that he could rule purgatory without Gods interference.

You will all taste oblivion... Which tastes like Red Bull.... Which is disgusting!

reply

Indeed . However , I highly doubt killing Sammael was all it took for The Dark to twist Michael as much as it did . Michael`s letter read by Gabriel earlier adds credence to my theory that the corruption was gradual rather than all at once . There are hints that the current Fallen leader is not what he seems throughout The Film and in deleted scenes :

Michael : I bet your master would love to hear how you defied me .
Baliel : Yeah , I bet he would , too .

Ahriman : You be in a funny mood tonight , boss .
Michael : I just look forward to this being over . No more conflict . ( A hint Michael isn`t fully corrupted as true Fallen love chaos and conflict )

Baliel : Sounds to me like you`ve been listening to the wrong source , boss .

Lilith : We should`ve united against you , not with you !
Michael: Tell me , if I killed your grand leader so easily , what threat could you possibly pose ?

reply

Um no , The Other Arcs just assumed he was Sammael . Note that The Fallen never use the name " Sammael " when speaking to Michael . They always call him " boss " . Also , Michael says to Baliel at one point " I bet your master would love to hear how you defied me " and Baliel replies in a serious tone , " Yeah , I bet he would , too " . This is likely referring to the true Sammael in Hell .

reply

Sammael was killed and replaced by Michael as the leader of The Fallen as well as Lilith`s husband( She resents him for this as Sammael seems to have been the only male Lilith ever loved ) before the events of The Film . Technically , all Fallen were " turned " as that`s what a Fallen is . An angel who starts out good but gives into base human emotions . Usually , this just makes them lose their wings and become human . However , when an angel is overpowered by base human emotions while retaining their supernatural powers to the point he or she is vulnerable to the temptations of The Dark ( power and freedom through sin ) , he or she becomes Fallen . When an angel`s been Fallen for long enough , he or she becomes a power-hungry , hedonistic , hate-filled , murderous sociopath . In other words , Fallen are no longer angels nor human but the very definition of monsters . Michael wasn`t a full Fallen but was rather torn between The Arcs ( particularly Gabriel who was like a little brother to him ) and The Fallen . Clear enough ?

reply

I'm curious to know where you got the Lilith-Sammael love connection from? I don't recall picking that up last time I saw the movie.

reply

Well , the fact that she apparently stuck around him for so long combined with her clear resentment of Michael ( his killer and usurper ) kinda gave me a feeling . Plus , it`s part of the Lore around those two Characters , not that The Film pays much attention to said Lore .

reply

Most of the fallen stuck around him because he could easily kill any of them and he was helping their side.

As far as the Lore goes, they made it a point to never mention Christianity.

Any other observations are welcomed though, I'm curious.

reply

Ya , they never mentioned any religion . They still took ideas from every single religion in existence and combined them with their own ideas , however .

reply

Um , Lilith wasn`t a coward like most of the other Fallen , though , or she would`ve never stood up to Michael whom she knew to be a powerful Fallen Arc who wasn`t adverse to killing .

reply

So did that one dood in the beginning, does that mean he and Micheal were in love?

reply

No , you`re totally missin` my point here ! I said Lilith was in love with the real Sammael and hated Michael ( his killer and usurper ) ! Balial was a coward who joined Michael out of fear like the other Fallen and at that point was so tired of seeing his fellow Fallen die around him while Michael clearly couldn`t care less that he no longer cared if he died since whether Gabriel or Michael killed him , he was gonna die either way and atleast with his " Boss " he could expect a quicker death !

reply

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wow, I'm stupid.

reply

When someone kills Sammael, He is turned into the new Sammael, so Michael killed him and is Sammael.

Gabriel killed Michael and will be the new Sammael, but He did commit suicide to prevent it

reply

He didn`t commit suicide . He fell and became human as shown in the original Australian version after-credits sequence .
