The prefix 'arch' meaning 'chief' or 'principal' implies that there is only one archangel, the chief angel; in the Scriptures 'archangel' is never found in the plural.

First Thessalonians 4:16 in speaking of the preeminence of the archangel and the authority of his office does so in reference to the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.

"The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel's voice and with God's trumpet, and those who are dead in union with Christ will rise first". It is therefore not without significance that the only name directly associated with the word 'archangel' is Michael.

That would be Archangel in the Catholic meaning. Other religions use angels and archangels as well. As do fantasy games and comics.
And I don't think that they were going for the correct theological aproach.
The 7 Archangels' names are also different in the religions, altough Michael and Garbiel are the most frequently used.
On what I found at least, I'm no expert.

The Archangels where the original Creations of god (going be Hebrew and christian text) there where in fact 8 not 7 lucifer was the first angel made then it was michael then gabriel ect ect. when god said "let there be light" the mornig star was born (lucifer) over time lucifer started to recruite and rebel against god. gabriel wa the angel that told god about this and michael was the one that casted lucifer out of heaven. reason why michael and gabriel are the two well know because they where seen as the right and left hand of god. michael's being the right hand, which basically means he was the muscle and gabriel being the left hand puting him as the brains.

your an idiot , the Bible does not mention anything about 8 Arch Angels "separate words mind you" Nor does the Bible say Lucifer was the 1st Angel of any kind.

Lucifer was a Cherubim Which is Higher than an Arch Angel.
DON'T any of YOU people read the Bible??? prob not.

Yes everyone knows Lucifer means "Light-Bringer" which is referring to His Testimony for God .... NOT actual Light. unbelievable I have to explain this..

So instead of watching movies 24/7 Crack open the Bible and study it inside and out then open the Torah,Septuagint and other Reputable materials and read them - ...Not crap that was made up by Nut jobs who try to make a few bucks off ignorant people who are too lazy to do the research themselves.

Micheal and Gabriel are not seen on the right hand of God.

Since you're going to be obnoxious... perhaps you should educate yourself.

First of all the bible is far from the only basis for angelic mythology. Secondly anyone who would only use the books in the 'current' bible is showing stunning naivete. The catholics call the other works excluded by those in power at the time the Apocrypha. Add to it that most of angelic mythology comes from Hebrew traditon and catholic church dogma.

Perhaps youd have less anger if you were less obnoxious and thus less lonely and depressed. And btw the references the poster was making re right and left hand of god etc werent literal. Literalism is the hallmark of a small mind my friend as is this insane need to insult catholics. (one of which i am not)

Right on , dude . I`m a non-religious Catholic ( Yes , I believe in a higher power but I don`t claim to know what that is nor what its will is , I just try to be as good a person in this life as I can and don`t obsess over the next ) . Thus , I`m cool with all religious and secular belief systems but when I feel threatened by someone of any denomination for not believing exactly as they do , I will not hesitate to defend my honor as an individual .

That's NOT Biblical. Nowhere in the Old or New Testament does it give ANY cardinal order of when angels were created. That's one reason why people are so messed up because people misquote scripture. BTW,contrary to popular belief Catholics are Christians also.

Right there in the passage, archangel is being used as a countable noun and it is using a indefinate article. If there was only one of them, it could be argued that THE Archangel is more appropriate. Ofcourse, if there IS only one Archangel at a time, and there is a high turn around of them (either due to death or retirement), perhaps to say "an archangel" IS appropriate, but to say "an archangel" implies that there are, or have been, many.

that was my mistake. I went back, got the old book and read Behind the Scriptures again and saw that i typed An instead of THE. Its because i was reciting it off by heart. Sorry for the trouble!! D=

Arch, in meaning archangel means high angel. Angel above the other angels.
Therefore there can be, and there are few of them. I would say 7 archangels.
Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel are four that are allway's mentioned.

Lucifer was a cherub the type of the angels sent to guard the garden of eden they are described as having flaming sword that cut in all directions. Ezekiel 28:12-19 O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness

Besides Michael and Gabriel, Apocryphal books and historical documents mention names of other angels. Given tasks as important as Michael. The book of enoch writes of seven powerful angels (20:1-8) Uriel who is set over the world and tartarus; Raphael who is set over the spirits of men; Raguel who takes vengeance over the world of luminaries; Michael who is set over the best part of mankind, over chaos, and over Israel; Saraqael, who is set over the evil spirits; Gabriel, who is set over paradise, the serpents (seraphim)and the cherubim and Remiel, Whom god set over those who rise. Well only three angels are mentioned by name; Lucifer, Michael and Gabriel. They all three are referred as archangels though. Other angels are mentioned in other texts related to God though.

"El" means 'of god' or 'like god'. Michael means, 'he who is like/of god', Lucifer is Latin for 'light bearer', I've read various meanings for Gabriel though, so not sure of the correct one.

I find anything with angels fascinating and interesting, so cool thread.
