success improvement POSSIBLE SPOILER

This was a great series the character development was superb, however does anyone believe that this series would have been more inspirational/improved if the central character had made something of his life ?

reply

No, because that is not realistic.

I was thinking that it might be a bit predictable if the story worked out perfectly with a happy ending, although if his lifestyle was somehow improved eg he got a girlfriend, got an average type of life, I think it may have made the show more popular.

I absoultely loved the show. It was pure genious.
I just didn't like where they went with it toward the middle.
They wasted episodes going to that Suicidal Island, and then choosing to wrap it up the way they did.

I felt they were missing something. Or I the viewer was missing something...

I still love the show. Just the way it is.
But when I 1st watched it, I was disspointed by the direction it took.
I was hoping he would get into some kind of an affair with senpai.
Instead everyone lives happily ever after except him and Misakai..
IT PISSES ME OFF!

Senpai has a baby?! WTF? Thats so unjust.
Then Yamazaki finds his perfect match? Thats Bullsh!t!
The problems are resolved for Satou-kun and his friend though.
It's sad but true.

Maybe thats just one reason why the show failed in popularity.
The other reason may be, that it just wasn't marketed well.

Great show, loved it! Even though it was not perfect, especially the middle episodes (I didn't care for the Mouse Road pyramid scheme episodes), so many of the feelings that Satou goes through are very accurate, and anyone with social anxiety etc, can probably relate to most of them.
Also I was really hoping that Satou and Misaki would get together. Ever since that episode when Satou's mother visits him, and Satou and Misaki almost kiss in the park, I've desperately wanted them to admit their love for each other.
Other than that I was very happy to see that there was no happy go lucky ending but an almost lukewarm, bittersweet finish.
If you can get past some of the flaws, awkward dialog, and animation and really understand what this anime is about then you will love it.

Later!

It seemed to me that their happiness would be short lived at best. Ostensibly they live happily ever after, but think about it... Senpai was going to kill herself, almost did kill herself. If she felt lonely before, just imagine how worse off she's going to be when she's alone with a baby. I know she was happy about it, but a baby would not magically solve her problems, I'm pretty sure it would only exacerbate them in the long run.

Same goes for Yamazaki. He might have been happy at the moment, but I felt like it definitely wouldn't last. With his bad temper, women issues and new found alcoholism, who would put up with him for very long?

I wanted things to work out for Satou and Misaki, but all we really got was a promise of a better life. I wanted more than that, I wanted assurance that things would go well for everyone. The ending was very bittersweet, even if it wasn't what I had hoped for, I could still appreciate the realism.

That was my only problem, besides that, I absolutely loved this anime and it's definitely my favorite anime that I have watched so far. It's simply beautiful.

I don't like Sato. He's way too weak and passive, I guess that for a japanese hikikomori that's normal but still... The way he behaves with Misaki is unrealistic and unplausible. OTOH this is what creates the funny situation : for example the last episode, how he reacts to Misaki with the NHK thing, highly dumb and unrealistic but fun as hell. I think this show should have more funny/dumb situations like this one

The realism of this show, particularly in that everything doesn't end up perfectly for the main character, is what makes it so great. This show's appeal is in the ability for its viewers to relate to Sato. If he lives happily ever after, they're not going to relate to him.

reply

No, I love it the way it is, make it feels so real and memorable. The sense of realism would be fading with happily-ever-after ending.

But it did have a happy ending, from a certain point of view.

SPOILERS FOLLOWS

Sato stops being a hikikomori and gets a part-time job, and he realizes that despite being a problem it was also a luxury since he was completely supported by his parents.

He gets two lifetime albeit long-distance friends (Yamazaki and his senpai)

He helps Misaki with her feelings of inferiority and starts tutoring her so that she can finish high school and they can go to college together. They sign a contract agreeing that neither of them will try to commit suicide again.

No, it's not "Sato gets the girl and lives happily ever after" but it's still touching and optimistic.

It also highlights a major point of the series: you can't just wait around for some miracle to happen which will solve all your problems (see Disney movies), you have to learn how to confront them and then slowly, and often painfully, make progress towards recovery

I think the ending was happy and optimistic which is what I wanted. Saito gets a part time job, has a few important people in his life, isn't as bad with crowds and people, will most likely get with Misaki and will more than likely be able to lead a happy and normal life with time. A fairy-tale, gets the girl, goes to college, everything works out fine type ending would have ruined the show. The show is based in reality so I'm happy they kept it that way all through out.

reply

I think it's a little presumptuous to say that he never made anything of his life.
The ending implies that this period of his life is over and the next, better one is beginning.
He's in a better place mentally, he and Misaki have each other to rely on, even if it's just in a platonic sense and the two of them are going to University. After that, it's pretty open ended and optimistic.

You have to remember that they're only 22/23 and 18/19 when the story ends, the path your life is going to take isn't set in stone when you're that young.

Given everything that they went through, the ending is about as happy as it could be while still being believable, which is not to say it's a downer ending. It's happy and realistic. It's one of the most satisfying anime endings I've ever seen.
