I just finished watching this so I'd like to give my insight. I know this thread is almost a year old, but here goes (SPOILERS AHEAD):
1. The ending is essentially telling you that no matter how hard you try, you will still turn out the same in the end. Sato will always be that hikikomori and Misaki will always have to live with knowing that her mother killed herself and that her step-father was a deadbeat. That's just how life is... However unfair and unjustly life is (which is A LOT), you just have to deal with it. And no, suicide is not an answer... The series confronts the topic of suicide by telling you that it's the most selfish escape route in life. It doesn't only affect yourself, but it also affects anyone you shared a relationship with. Suicide always seems like the best answer, but in the end it's a fast solution to small problems. It's been told many times that when people attempt suicide, they realize how small and insignificant the problems became when they were on the verge of doing it. And besides in the end, we'll go under from old age, a freak accident, or many of the ridiculous ways to die...So why not just live life? You only have one life to live.
2. Sato and Misaki's relationship is complex. My interpretation is that they do love each other, but sometimes it's better to just be friends. Again, down the road it's an open topic that they might eventually get together because they are indeed good for each other... The one thing that stands out is that Sato always had a "one true love" feeling for Hitomi, his senpai from school. Sato would easily give up Misaki for her, which you can see happens in many of the episodes. Essentially, the show was trying to say that "you never get the girl of your dreams", which is also another topic you learn in life.
3. Like jms_209 said, the purpose of the game was never to build a game that would become a best seller or make tons of money. It was all about leaving something meaningful behind. The game was also a reason for them to keep hanging out to build memories, as well as a reason to keep on living. When you live without a purpose, life becomes meaningless.
I agree with jms_209 about the ending, it was fairly neutral. I can't say it was good nor bad. It leaves the viewer to interpret what will happen next. But it doesn't leave you on a sad ending nor a completely happy one.
The show hits close to home and is definitely one of my favorite anime because of this. Let me know what you guys thought about my interpretations!
