. . . to just steal a baby (from a married couple of course), rather than go through this elaborate kidnapping, forced wedding and impregnation? They were obviously OK with the idea of the baby not being their own. Maybe I missed something.

They wanted to target a sinning couple. a married couple having sex and a baby aren't sinners. that's why they asked about marriage and later church. they were trying to pick a non-married couple, sinning who were not christian and SAVE the unborn baby from hell. or something like that.
