There's over the top action like Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann which will keep you entertained even when the fight scenese are insane and there's retarded over the top where nothing makes any sense at all, but let's have alot of *beep* popping out of mid air. The latter category applies to Top wo Narae 2. The writers and director had to be smoking crack when they went with this. Half of the *beep* in the movie is beyond even what a mentally disabled child could imagine.

This movie should not, in any form or way, be associated with the first Gunbuster. The only redeeming quality was the end where everything actually ties in.

Which is the best compliment you could give 'Diebuster.' This wasn't some rehashed formula cooked up to pass as a 'Gunbuster' spin-off, it was its made with its own direction in mind (there's a reason you can get both versions packaged together). And as for your complaints about the action being over-the-top... are you not familiar with the super robot genre? Or better yet, are you not familiar with the staff who worked on this series? Pretty much every staff member that worked on 'FLCL' was hired to bring the same attributes to 'Diebuster' and in that regard, the series flourishes.
