Sorry if it seems a stupid question , but is this a proper 3rd movie in the GITS story , or some spin off of the tv series or abit of both ??

I think this one is officially #3 in the movies; while the TV series is an alternate universe version (or maybe the timeline is behind the movies since the Major is still a part of the team?).

In case the Stand Alone Complex subtitle wasn't clear enough, Solid State Society follows on directly from the season 2 of the television series.

It is part of the TV series "alternate universe" storyline, and separate from the Original movie and sequel ("Innocence").
