Clubbed in Coventry

i have read two of Geoff Thompsons books, the novel red mist and the auto biography on which this film is based, watch my back, the latter being an excellent read and should not be lumped with simlar gangster and violence books as it offers true insight into human nature and also to a certain period in time. The book is excellently written and both funny and shocking, at times its hard to believe what Geoff went through and some of the events that happend. Anywayim really lokking forward to this film and i hope they film this in the Coventry where the action took place and where geoff was born, raised and worked, this will keep it authentic and down to earth rather than the usual gloss alot of film makers put on things nowdays. Good look Geoff looking forward to this one

Segs, I completely agree with your comments. I too am a big fan of everything Geoff has done and have had the honour of meeting and training with this legend of a martial artist. I'm also a Clubbed investor and know they will be filming up North (I'm guessing it will be Coventry) Ill keep you updated when I learn more, hey I might even be in it myself as one of the benefits is a chance to be an extra!

Just an update on this for you, Ive just got back from filming as an extra on saturday in London. Apparently half will be filmed there, and the other half in Birmingham so watch this space.......

Coventry looks too much of a dump to film in. Would've been great if they did but not surprised it ain't

reply

I don't agree, Coventry isn't a dump. It's a great City filled with grat people who are honest and straight forward (well not all honest) they work hard and play hard. Yes it is a tough City but not as violent as it used to be. I know Geoff, have done since we were kids at school,( don't see much of him anymore)I can remember we he told he was a doorman in the 80's when I was working at a pub called the Devonshire Arms in Cov, i was really suprised as he was one of the quieter lads at school but he was one of the best. At that time in Cov it was violent and difficult for doormen and barstaff all over the City. Anyway, good luck to Geoff, hope the film makes a mint and becomes a massive hit - Bill Moloney

I 2nd that - Watch My Back is an awesome, aweinspiring read...Geoff sounds a right good lad!!

reply

Coventry most certainly is a dump.
It's not a slight on all Coventrians, but let's be honest, when you have the grandeur of Leamington Spa down the road, you're always going to be up against it.
Slightly improved from a decade or two back, but as the saying goes, you can't polish a turd.
Mind you, there aren't many Midlands cities that are all that pretty anyway.

Midlander - there can be only one...

How so?

I live in Coventry and it ain`t so bad.

Is it worse than Hull?

A friend was offered a phd at Coventry and turned it down. He said it was worse than Hull. Really I can't imagine.

Glad to hear that the book is real. I will be buying it.

I used to live in Cov 3 years ago. My husband (Mark Wood) used to work with Geoff Thompson in the factory he talks about in the film, he remembers Geoff sneaking off to the loo to sit and write his 'autobiography'. My father in law remembers him also - he was his supervisor!

When he was working one night on the doors...he let us in for free once...great bloke! We wish him all the the best of luck for the film. Wish it was filmed in Cov though.

I def will be watching the film....bringing back those memories...two tone days!

Yeah.....must admit Cov is a bit of a dump.....why do you think I moved away. In sunny Dorset now. Best of luck Geoff!!

I saw this film & thought it was superb,my Mrs is from Coventry & remembers all the aggro at chucking out time from the clubs lol.It seemed that every kid in the whole west midlands was into SKA in the 80's.
Remember the SKA man (woman for girls)on the back of every cool rude boy's Harrington jacket.
Worst place to live in the UK though has to be London, overrated arse end of England.

London's redeeming features are the excellent routes out the the place, most Londoners are so far up their own arse they wouldn't know that life exists outside the M25 asphalt collar.
If the quality of life has has been reduced in other cities it is probably due to the greedy London (W)bankers that has gambled away the peoples of Great Britain's hard earned cash.

Clubbed was an excellent British film that accurately portrayed night life in British cities (including London boroughs) during the 80's

A big film fan im normally the last to say this..... but the book was so much better than the film. I didnt realise it was based on the book until the end credits when he closed his diary. the book is world class and will stick with you for years.

Its a testament to the book that so much was missing in the film yet it was still a really good film.
