Doesn't deserve 5.9

How is this movie getting 5.9?
This movie had great acting, witty script, and decent directing.
It definately does not deserve a 5.9.
Characters were detailed and story was above average.
The scenes where the main character were on a mission were memorable. The dialogues before each victim dies is also humorous in a dark comedy way.
This movie definately doesn't deserve a 5.9.
I recommend this movie, don't let the rating fool you.

Yeah, it's because almost all give it a ten, which doesn't count as much.

reply

at least a 8.5 , i just saw it and the direction of the movie was so-so (but superior than most hollywoood crap) but the last third was highly artistic and quite beautiful. The characters were surreal and most importan, full of life.

This one deserves at least a cult following

I gave it a hefty 9/10. By the way, what was the song at the end with the woman singing.

reply

I don't know, but the DVD comes with a soundtrack, if you wanted to know.

That's "Bella Ciao" a very famous Italian Folk song. On wikipedia there is a whole chapter about the song:

reply

Yes, exactly.
And I don't understand why there is a ITALIAN folk song, the protagonist likes SPANISH toreadors.
It's so stupid.
It doesn't deserve 5.9, it deserves 1.

reply

Stick to your brainless hollywood stuff, benaress.
It suits you more.

reply

well I gave it a 6 so I think 5.9 is about right

Yeah, I can't believe not more people are posting about this movie. It's just the type of film hardcore fans of "A Bittersweet Life" and "Oldboy" would go for, such as is the case with me. Thoroughly entertaining film. Maybe Quentin Tarantino will give it his thumb of approval and thus, will get more people to check it out. Good to see the rating bumped to a 6.5 at least.

reply

I think the problem is .. that I haven't been able to find where you can rent it.. so your only option is buying it (Well at least here in the USA). So, not as many people will see it.. unless it spreads by Word of Mouth.

I gave it a 9/10...

Ranks up there with my favorites:

BITTERSWEET LIFE

wow. are you all stupid? this was one of the worst korean films i've seen - don't even dare compare it to Chan Wook Park's films. Stupid, mindless flick, all style no substance.

For people who are into surface gloss, and wholly-contrived characters who are little more than the sum of their surface "cool", NO MERCY should fit the bill, but it's no OLDBOY, that's for sure. It's not even a BITTERSWEET LIFE, a movie which it could have equalled with a little more effort on the part of the writers. The Tarantino allusion made by an earlier poster is apt, but seriously, is that a GOOD thing these days? Tarantino is SO 1997. Outside of Jackie Brown, I've yet to see a movie where Tarantino shows us what he KNOWS instead of what he's SEEN. And I'm a guy all to happy to admit I've owned most of the movies that "influenced" since long before he came on the scene. But really, his movies, especially the first two, created a wave of wannabes that felt exhausted by 1995. And now we get NO MERCY, with yet another suave, quirky hitman and the erzatz "family" that latches on to him.

Dragon Dynasty made a small mistake picking this one up for distribution in North America, and it proves they're really only interested in "hooks" they can sell rather than quality content in current Asian cinema.
"Ooooh, this one's got a hitman in it," sez one of the Weinstein fartcatchers. "And he's a mute! Cooooool. And the whole picture has this OLDBOY look to it. And there's lots of extremely realistic violence to counterbalance the quirkiness of the hero and his wacky friends. That's soooooo deep." And then Harvey or Bob say "get it" like they do with dozens of movies each year before they really take a long, hard, look at what they've bought. Then they throw it on DVD with some nice extras and hope enough people buy it before the IMDB and Amazon ratings drop even further.

Fortunately, Dragon Dynasty also snapped up CITY OF VIOLENCE, though very likely for the same reasons, but CITY OF VIOLENCE lacks all of the pretention of NO MERCY, yet still comes in wrapped in a big coating of "cool." But the makers of CITY had no pretentions about what they were making, which is essentially a very linear, 90-minute comic book without the "quirks."

Is NO MERCY well made? Of course it is. Finding a Korean movie that ISN'T well made is very difficult these days. Finding one that has a solid screenplay at its core is another matter. And like so many Korean genre movies before it, NO MERCY is lacking that fundamental element, and no amount of surface gloss and Tarantino-style bloodletting can cover up such a gaping hole.

Movie's worth a 3, which is what I just gave it on the main page.

Look deeper and you'll see what's missing.

Well, wether you like a flick or you dont, you cant influence you impression.
EVEN if THIS movie AINT witty AS others I just LIKE it.
You cant watch this movie 20 times like eg starwars, the cult status is missig. BUT nevertheless, alwaysthemore.

I gave 8 stars without thinking too much whats missing or not.

Yay, I'm all for Tarantino bashing! I AM SO SICK of people comparing films to Tarantino films... Tarantino is a legend in his own mind, as well as his fanboys, but he is not all that. Even Park commented that he is the greatest thief in Hollywood today. Tarantino passes off his movies as "homage" but lets be honest... he's blatantly ripping them off from the movies of his childhood.
And people are eating them up like candy, while not investigating the originals. At least, that's the way it seems to me.

NMFTR was good, but not as good as Oldboy. Had Ha Kyun Shin not been in the film, I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much. It did have the action, and plenty of sex, and I'll go so far as to say that I enjoyed the ending scene. What was disappointing about NMFTR was that it started out like it would be deeper, and it tried, but failed to pull off what it started.
Even so, I don't think I would rate it as low as a 3, because I was entertained, and it did have some touching moments, like the picnic scene and the very ending. I think I would give it more of a 5 or a 6.

They're making you one of them, my peacock...

reply

Yeah this movie was really good.. im into all these korean movies.. sad ending that makes me love em.

reply

I gave it a 4. I've seen enough Korean movies by now to see that this was just some regurgitated mess. I love how the lead actor has now played a mute in at least two movies. Honestly, it was enough in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (except in that movie, he wasn't narrating - that's a good thing.)

I loved this movie and considering the amount of piece of *beep* 7+ movies, I'd give it 9. Definetly needs a higher rating, enjoyed it as much as Vengeance triology. And this is a personal opinion, no need to start bashing, everyone likes their own type of movies, and I loved this one.

reply

I gave it 7/10, which is close to its current average. The music and black comedy didn't mesh too well with the killing and drama, and as others have said the story consisted of cliches (/childhood love encounter). I mean, the mute lead played a mute lead in another Korean thriller full of murder and vengeance!

If you've seen the Vengeance trilogy (which are over-rated and shallow--Oldboy's lack of substance/reasoning behind the OTT revenge and reliance on style making its 8.4 average silly) then you've seen it all before. That's why most won't be blown away by No Mercy.

The actress playing "She" did a great job with her portrayal of a troubled but dominant and sexual woman. It made me chuckle how she had so much power over an assassin, early on, and her relationship with the illogicaly distant mute was the main draw, for me. Her beauty and talent make me hopeful she's been in other decent flicks.

reply

Well, the rating is much, much higher now.
