Interesting lack of camera movements
The lack of camera movement really makes this an interesting film. When she bring's the "Flem" over to dinner, your eyes have to move from character to character to perceive each actors reaction to the events. The quiet brother stops eating at a certain point, but if you chose to focus on Thierry or the mom, you'll miss that detail. It makes the drama seem more real and powerful than if the director was giving us closeups to tell the audience what to feel like in Hollywood melodrama.
The shot at the end, with Thierry hiding behind a tree, while an ambulance pulls up the house in the background stands out as efficient , simple use of screen real estate. Again, the drama(for me at least) seemed more powerful than if we had been given closeups, or a cut was made to see what was going on in the house.
The actor playing Thierry was in the Dardennes brothers new film as the addict that has to be killed by Lorna, by the way. Anyone know if he's a Belgian pop star or something?
