I went to a screening at the London Film Festival, and during the Q&A I asked the director why she decided not to explain how Olga died, or what happened to Boris. She was pretty vehement that this was up to the audience.

There is the curious scene of Olga speaking to the young woman in the park, and walking away with her. Are we to assume this connected with her sudden death?

I suspect Olga and Boris were lovers: the photo indicated this. And perhaps she was searching for him in that park, and other places. He said he was guiding Russian tourists, but that was probably untrue.
However, those shots of her in certain parts of a deserted Milan indicated that she was searching for something, sometimes in obscure parts of the city: But, really, who and what?
