No 87 on The Times' Top 100 Films of the Noughties

My girlfriend and I are watching through all the top 100 films of the noughties as published by The Times and this popped up at number 87.

I have to say, I was not a fan of this at all. For all the nice scenery and decent acting, there was no story to this and nothing happened. If you read the Times' summary of this it's so pretentious that you know its going to be a boring film. Sorry, didn't get it!

Anyway, if you're interested, you can keep up to date with our progress (and see the The Times' full list) on our blog at:

I felt the same way about the film "Blue Is the Warmest color;" pretentious, self-important dreck with near pornographic sex scenes. and the most pretentious critics praised that as a masterpiece, despite it's ugly cinematography and exploitative nature. But this Turkish film is a different story. Films like these aren't judged by their storytelling capabilities. "Times & Winds" isn't trying to tell a linear story; it is offering a glimpse into a different place, another culture, that most don't get to see. It is specifically a Turkish film, and it is dealing with subject matter directly relating to that culture. In this film we get to see parents and how they raise and relate to their children; how men always choose one son to be their favorite while sometimes neglecting the others, and the super strict way that mothers raise their daughters. Then we see how these things affect the children, and how it determines the kind of adults that they will grow into. Now the NY Times critics ARE pretentious in the way they analyze these films..but this film is really not pretentious. in fact it is the complete opposite; it is disarmingly simple, even primitive. People who have no interest in this part of the world most likely will be bored silly, and wonder just what the point is. But some films are not meant to merely entertain; but to educate. "Times & Winds" is an extremely beautiful work, and that cannot be denied IMO..
