Why does Omer cry at the end of the film?

reply

my interpretation was he just realised that his dad had died and that no matter how much he hated him he was still his dad and that he would never get that time back. The realisation of having to live the rest of his life and never hearing his father say "i love you" or telling his father that he loved him had just hit him and it was too painful for him to do anything except cry.
RIP Georgia.

Omer hated his father and knowing he would die does not change this, but sometimes it is necessary for a father to die for a son to live, and his tears are more likely due to a realization of this fact. and a release of frustration, than to any love lost. It's also why the movie ends with Morning, a new beginning.

I thought that after seeing his father seriously ill, he was overcome by guilt at his earlier attempts to hurt him, and also over the frustration of a child who wants to be loved but is so clearly not the chosen son.

Yes. I agree with that in all respects. When he hated his father and was planning his death everything else became subordinated to that wish. When he realised that his father was going to die of his own volition things became clearer for him.

I don't believe we're given enough information to assume the father has died though it is pretty clear that such conclusions are left to the viewer. However, Ömer is overcome with emotion - the weight of his own thoughts and feelings at the start of another bright, new day. Again, I don't think the viewer is lead by the nose here. We are presented with the opportunity to interpret and our response is a periscope into the subconscious. Maybe Ömer is overcome with guilt. Maybe dread. But my read isn't really happiness or relief though I could see some viewing the sunrise scene as indicative of such.
