AMC had changed the designation of the most of their line to AMC instead of Rambler in the early 1960s. Only the American (their small car similar to the Nova and Falcon) was designated a Rambler. When they renamed the midsized AMC Classic to the Rebel in 1967 they reverted back to the Rambler name for a year or two. During that time period you would see some cars with both designations on them, such as the R in the center of the wheel covers with AMC on the body. It was a marketing nightmare to some extent as it appeared that the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing at AMC.
