david cross' letter

cross' letter to larry the cable guy criticized him for telling tired gay jokes, yet the gay republican character relies on the same tired gay jokes.

reply

"Larry The Cable Guy" is the worst successful comedian ever though. Freak Show isn't successful. There's a pretty big difference.

Oh yeah, and "Larry" provoked Cross in the first place.

reply

Larry The Cable Guy sucks. Even corky romano was a better film. i read the letter (googled it) and i think "fartingly" is a word.

reply

what does success has to do with it?

reply

If something is successful then that means it has been exposed to a rather large audience. Lots of people know about Larry and his "comedy", not nearly as many people know of Freakshow, thus Larry has far greater influence with his gay jokes than this show.

reply

actually...Cross is making fun of gay stereotypes and the like. He is indirectly mocking those who hate gays, thus the leviticus 20:13 badge the character wears. also, Cross bashed Larry for telling BAD gay jokes. for the entirity of Arrested Development all Cross did was tell one giant (and hilarious) gay joke.

So ... it's okay when someone you like does it, but not okay when someone you don't like does it. Gee, Chet, sounds like opinion to me.

David Cross stopped being funny precisely when he started taking himself so seriously. 'Arrested Development' was possibly the most overrated show of all time, it was such dumb, obvious humor (look! a stairway going over the prison wall! nyuk nyuk! oooh laconic self-aware running commentary by a narrator! we're so clever!) but critics ate it up. What can you do. But now he's joined with that other self-important has-been, Janeane Garofalo, to achieve new levels of banality. Sad, really.

There is a definite point of seperation here. the Leviticus 20:13 thing pretty much spells out the satirical intent. He is mocking those who think that all gays act like this.

It's okay to make gay jokes, it's okay to make jew jokes. The problem comes when someone makes lazy gay or jew jokes that exist soley to mock any specific group of people for something they cannot control. Cross is obviously mocking people for being backwards bigots and idiots.

In addition, the Gay Republican character is a parody because SO MANY Republicans are anti-gay, then get busted for being gay pedophiles or smoking crack with gay prostitutes. It's not gay bashing, it's making fun of these ridiculous right-wing fanatical hypocrites.
