You should remember that when you open Gordon's locker in the beginning of HL 1 in Black Mesa, there was a picture of a baby there. So, Gordon obviously has a wife and a kid in his life. It's strange thing really, because his kid would be in his early twenties in HL 2 and they never mentioned what happened with his family.

Well, it is more than likely that Gordon's wife and kids are all dead. Maybe that's why he doesn't speak. He's still agonizing over the death of his family, and is killing Combines as a way of revenge and / or focusing away from the painful memory...?
shareIt was an easter egg placed in by one of the Valve team who worked on the level of the original Half-Life game. Gordon Freeman isn't married, nor any children. It says so in the letter he received from Black Mesa about his employment there.
