Who is the best President?

Who do you think is the best President in U.S. history?

reply

Lincoln

reply

Lincoln caused the only civil war the USA has known. That should disqualify him from consideration

reply

George Washington...He had a hemp field

The other Jeffrey Lebowski, the Millionaire!!

reply

#1 Lincoln - he managed to hold the union together during the civil war and end slavery

#2 FDR - he comes in a close second. Roosevelt carried the nation through the Great Depression with his social programs and fireside chats and also through WWII and managed this with an isolationist congress. I would put him first but I think he somewhat lacked morally. He did nothing to stop lynching in the South and basically could care less about afro-americans. Civil rights progressed little to none by result of Roosevelt.

reply

Please- FDR #2-WWII saved his butt-all he did was talk during the 30s and made unkept promises(whats new) the depression was worse in 1940 than 1930 but a good ol' war sure fixed that-thank God for Capitalism-it works-the 1st five presidents were the Best ever --with Lincoln having the servitude to clean up the slavery mess they ignored!!!!! "cept for Teddy the rest just did their time and furthered themselves.....

reply

My top 7 goes George Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Woodrow Wilson in that order. (Others who come close are: James Monroe, Calvin Coolidge, Richard Nixon (minus the whole Watergate problem), and Ronald Reagan). Reagan and Coolidge did something. Made the economy great. During their presidencies, the country was in great economy. If Watergate had not happened, Richard Nixon would be considered a great president, talked peace with China and Russia, ended the Vietnam War, and others. But my very favorite was Teddy.

I certainly agree with you about Reagan. He reallocated money from people to weapons and in so doing intensified the problem the United States is going to have with entitlements for many years to come. American governments have for years treated Social Security as a piggy bank. I also don't like his policy of busting unions. (I was a teacher in my past lifetime. I liked my union).

I pick John Quincy Adams as my favorite president, not for what he did while in office, but for what he did afterwards. He served in congress. His great contribution was that he brought every bill that Americans presented to him to congress. He believed the constitution had to be exercised. That took both great insight and great courage. I don't really have a second choice, but if you put a gun to my head, I suppose I would pick Kennedy, not for what he did, but for those he had in his cabinet.

I like Clinton for the same reason. I liked Ruben's policy of a strong dollar and his attempt to his attempt to balance the budget. He also understood the idea of the threat of force was better than force itself.

reply

Easy: JFK and Clinton

(both democrats of course)

reply

Probably Lincoln, because he helped save the union during the bloody Civil War. He was also an honest person, at least as honest as you can make them. And he knew how to talk.

reply

Obama, hands down. He is the greatest president this country has ever had. He has brought salvation to this country once and for all.

reply

JFK certainly. He saved us from being destroyed during the Cuban Missile Crisis, if he had gone over Cuba and bombed the *beep* out of it like his advisors had wanted him too we wouldn't be sitting around here talking about this. We almost certainly would've been nuked by the Soviets and then we would've nuked them back etc. etc. He chose to do what he wanted whether his advisors wanted him to or not. He was the type of guy that was gonna do what he wanted and drag you kicking and screaming through it. And that's the sort of tenacity that got him killed but it also made him a great man.

Its better to burn out than fade away.

reply

Most important for US history: Washington, Lincoln, FDR
Greatest unfulfilled potential: Lincoln, Kennedy

reply

imseriousleh, I like the simplicity and truth in your comment. My feelings for FDR come from what my parents experienced and felt. With John Kennedy there was such hope. I was too young to vote for him, but old enough to know the power he had with the American people. Sad that so many were threaten by his position and that of his brother Robert Kennedy. I think Robert would have been a great president. Sadly... we never found out.

reply

Washington, for not really wanting it like any of the others. William Henry Harrison, for dying a month after he became president.
