Copycat Composing

I'm speechless. How unbelievably arrant is it to just copy a well known score and presenting it as your work. That is just thievery, nothing more. Marcel Barsotti stole Newman's American Beauty soundtrack and used it for Wortmann's documentary. Bad behaviour. Nice movie though. We'll get our reward in 2010!

Are you saying that he incorporated melodies or parts of tunes from AB into his work or that the score contains complete tunes that have been composed for AB?

It's not like this is a big Hollywood production. This was originally made for TV. In that case one often finds that score parts are licensed and recycled from other films. Cases I remember: A film on the possibility of tsunamis in the North Atlantic using a tune from "Master and Commander" and a documentary about the emergency services in Hamburg using a tune from the TV series "24".

That said, I can't remember reading the name "American Beauty" in the musical credits, but I wouldn't know single tunes from that film since I haven't seen it or listened to the soundtrack.

That's exactly the point. The composer does not really take samples from Newman's score (wich would have been perfectly ok as long Newman is credited) but uses self composed tunes which are so unbelievably similar to the AB soundtrack that it is just embarassing.

It´s hundred percent the AB score. I was wondering, because it was a little different and doesn´t appear on the soundtrack in this version, but it´s just too similar.
Another thing is the beginning, it´s also "stolen" from AB. That short scene, that actually appears towards the middle or the end of the documentary, then title of the film. The same happens in American Beauty.
That´s not an unusual beginning for movies probably, but as he also uses that music, it´s hard to imagine Wortmann or the producers haven´t seen AB.
Actually I think it´s okay to refer to another movie, especially in a documentary, but I didn´t read any credits for AB, but as the soundtrack is so similar, would be needed.
Maybe they should´ve called it "German Beauty".

I just did a little research. This guy Barsotti indeed says it´s his music!!
I´m so shocked, I mean, it´s not just similar, it is the AB soundtrack. You´re totally right, this is thievery, I´m just devastated, nobody has said anything about it yet. I wonder, what Thomas Newman would say, if he hears that.
And American Beauty is not just a movie, it´s one of the biggest and best over the last ten years.

what a damn stupid question.. its about originality and credit where credit is due.. through this, the value of the film is irreparably damaged. it doesnt take much to give accrediation and the filmakers should have gotten that right..
cheap cheap cheap.. i bet they thought theyd get away with it.. and since germany is so adamant about copyrights (GEMA!!!), it comes of like a gag

I don't know. It does seem like he got his "inspiration" from Newman, but it seems to be more about the instrumentation than anything else. I actually find the music as such comparatively distinct.

He doesn't use the same melodies as in AB but very similar instrumentation, sound effects and rythem. So I would call it "heavily inspired by". I watched the National Treasure movies some time ago and thought some of the soundtrack was by Newman because it sounded exactely like him. Wasn't though.
