thanks tsukamoto san!!!

when asian horror and asian movies in general are said to be dead, in steps seasoned director shinya tsukamoto. this movie was pretty good. not worth buying but it kept me satisfied for now.

but seriously, what is with the lack of asian movies being released in the US recently? there are some movies out there waiting to be realeased like A Bittersweet Life, I'm a Cyborg but Thats OK, Re-Cycle, Into The Mirror, and many others. i havent seen many released by tartan asia extreme in a while.

anybody seen recently released asian movies in the US?

also, how about shinya tsukamoto using Hitomi for his lead actress? i never would have seen that comming. i thought she did a pretty good job. if you dont know who she is, here is what she is previously known for:

Asian horror isn't even remotely close to being dead: http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000024/nest/85822569?d=85822569#85822569

when you say something is dead in reguards to something like this, it means not much new is coming out. when you say punk rock is dead, it means no new bands are coming out. get what i mean?

theres only a few of the movies you listed that i havent seen. not much new has been comming out. tartan asia extreme hasnt released any new movies since 2007. the only ones ive seen this year are retribution, black house, the wig, and a bloody aria.

i think one reason for this is koreas film industry did horrible at the box office in 2007.

Reply: Yes, South Korea will have fewer theatrically released horror films released in 2008, but Japan and Thailand don't seem to be under any delays. Plus, there are a lot of movies that fly under the radar that won't be heard of until their DVD releases in late 2008 or early 2009. I'll make my determinations then.

Of the 75 movies on my list, about a dozen were from 2007, and there are more I'm going to add to the list over the next few weeks (and those are just the films I liked). I'm unfamiliar with the directors for most of those films as well, so there appears to be a lot of new blood in the system.

Reply: That's because Tartan is closing shop. (I typically use Ehit.com or blind buy the new ones anyway.)

I personally don't see any letup on East Asian horror films (or any other genre, with the exception of Hong Kong flicks, which have dropped significantly in production over the past decade or so). Maybe a weak theatrical run in 2008 will trickle down to me later on, but right now the well doesn't seem to be running dry.

why do you say tartan is closing shop? are they going out of business?

Unfortunately, yes. http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/sad-news-tartan-us-closes-its-doors

I was moving away from U.S. distribution companies anyways, but it still sucks because I did rent a lot of Tartan's films when I was just getting into Asian horror. On the positive side, this might stir additional interest in online Asian rental services as well as DVD purchases for films that are not released in the U.S.

Asian horror is dead? Ummm every horror movie coming out is a re-hash of an older (sometimes not even that old) Asian horror movie...
