Just because these are the only two 'lucid dream' films you've seen...

Just because Inception and Paprika are the only films you've seen that are about merging dreams and reality doesn't mean Inception is ripping off Paprika.

The concept is not that original.

I actually hated Waking Life, that's a lot sloppier than Paprika. And yes there are plenty of other films, however there seems to be flack because Inception is the most recent.

reply

Well actually I've seen many films that feature lucid dreams. But when watching the elevator scene in inception paprika is the one that instantly came to mind. I don't think it's a coinsidence that's true for so many people. They are VERY SIMILAR. The corridor scene also reminded me of paprika.

If those two scenes didn't exist I'd never make the connection in the first place. But that similarity was more than just a movie with the same theme as another.

Videodrome and The Cell also share similarities with this movie. Even A Nightmare on Elm Street is related to Parika.

Didn't Nolan champion Paprika as one the major influences on Inception? I thought he aimed to pay homage to moments/scenarios in Paprika throughout Inception. There's nothing wrong with that either. Directors often look to other directors for inspiration.

Besides the mirror scene, none of those other images aren't things I haven't seen in other scifi film from the past.

Now I think Nolan probably did use this film as a visual influence, but that's pretty much what every filmmaker does when they make any film and it's taking your influences and doing your own thing with it.

Yep.

There have been many films long ago about dreams, like Bunuel or even Kurosawa.

Moreover according to Wikipedia, Nolan wrote an 80 page treatment of Inception in 2002 right after completing Insomnia and Paprika came out in 2006. I'm sure Nolan must have seen Paprika when it came out but neither stole from the other.

true.

Nolan took the basic idea. Ripping off is too much.
