Who else was disapointed at the ending???

who else was disapointed to se that Atsuko (paprika) did not end up with
the Detective at the end of the movie?

reply

Same here. Why'd she have to end up with that fat pig?

reply

Cause she loved him.....

But Paprika loved the cop.

That is impossible. First, she had maturity, he acted like a 15 year old boy. He was a fat lard, she was thin. She showed no hint of even loving or caring for him during the whole movie before the end. Yeah, yeah, I know, the story is that way, but I didn't like that "twist" at all.

reply

I don't see how it's impossible, she said as much herself when talking to paprika. The reason she always acted cold towards him was because of her personality. She tries to control everyone in her life and couldn't bring herself to admit that she loved an immature, obese man like him. But she does, and that's how it is.

Yes it is. She learned from the dreams that she did, somehow, love him.

Its about excepting your true feelings... Should have been better devolped though.

Probably because the "fat pig" blasts the oversize doll away, and thereby saves same Atsuko (Paprika).

And probably also because he was the only one seeing the need to (psysically) unite the two halves of the same person: Atsuko and Paprika.
-Side note: Contrast the (very unpleasant, even for male viewers) scene, where Osanai psysically tears/abuses Paprika and Chiba from each other with the gentle scene where the two are reunited and reborn inside the giant Tokita robot. Sheer anime genius, if you ask me!!

There is nothing inside - and they rebuild it every 20th year.

It's the Lois Griffin syndrome.

reply

Haha. Genius.

I was disappointed by the final climax. I felt that reality and dreams colliding was sort of weak, then the Chairman became evil and large and paprika ate him.

I wanted a crazy dream duel or something really trippy, such as they collide and fight over supremacy of being.

Still a good film though.

reply

Exactly my thoughts! The ending was kinda dull, I thought it would be ending in ergo proxy or fate zero style..

reply

yeah, i was a little dissapointed that the lass didn't end up with the detective.

well at least they tried something different by having the chick fall for the fatso for once in a movie.

There was nothing wrong with the ending. The detective didn't love Dr. Chiba, he loved Paprika.
Dr. Chiba had used Paprika as a way of expressing herself. Paprika wasn't a suppressed and serious woman, she was full of life, something Dr. Chiba wanted to be but couldn't.
In the end we see that Dr. Chiba is able to break the shackles and is was able to express her true emotions and desires as herself and not as Paprika.

reply

Thank you. You made the point perfectly. The detective did NOT know Atsuko for who she really was. There was nothing really between them.

Wow. This is a cartoon. You folks seriously need to get out and breath fresh air.

this is a movie. and people will express their thoughts on it, the fact that it's animated doesn't really make it any different.

reply

The fact that the film is animated can make a difference, but these people are looking at the fact it was animated in the wrong way

who ate all the crunchy cream pies?

reply

I wasn't. The dude she ended up with was a nice guy, smart and intelligent, though childlike and a lot of fun.

Plus I imagine they good doctor put him on a diet too. It isn't healthy to be that rotund. So he probably shrunk down to reasonably more healthily rotund.

He said,
"Just put your feet down child,
'Cause you're all grown up now."

If you look at the movie, there's a lot of inversions of Stereotypes. Usually (And although sexist, it is true in cinema) You usually have male protagonists saving the day, but in Paprika, we see an inversion of the stereotype, and it is actually Atsuko doing the investigating and saving the day. The inversion of stereotypes comes into play at the end with the fact that she ends up with.. I forgot his name.. The large guy. It's more inverting of stereotypes in the fact that it's usually the handsome detective getting the woman in the end (As portrayed in the dreams sequence where his film finally ends, and the detective kisses an unconcious Atsuko). This is flipped around, and she is actually in love with the large chubby guy, which for me is a brilliant and highly un-cliched ending.

Why the hell didn't i put that in my essay?

I'm not here... This isn't happening

i thought it was very cute that Dr. Chiba (or whatever) ends up with the fatso brilliant scientist. A lot of women are cold and hide their feelings at first. Paprika isn't directly Dr. Chiba and vice versa. As other mentioned, Atsuko loved Paprika, who represents life and possiblity and dreams. Who wouldn't be attracted to her?

I thought the movie was very clever and I liked how the movie, like many of these sort of films talked about balance. Paprika respresented of course feminimity and a certain kind of creative power which canceled out the dominating masculine force of the chairman. Which doesn't to me mean that female = creative, male = dominating. The different sexes just helps demonstrates the opposite qualities. This balance idea worked well in Princess Mononoke (excuse my spelling) and Matrix Revolutions. I liked the later much more than the former however, Princess Mononoke was much too overated.
IMHO, Paprika is by far one of the best animes, if not even animated films in general.

While I admit it was good to see Atsuko end up with Tokita (the fat scientist) and go against convention saying love is more than skin deep.

At the same time it felt weak because the two characters never really had a conversation that went beyond the plot or "You';re so fat".

It was sweet but it also felt forced.

There. It's on the Internet. Thus it's official

reply

hehe, skin deep, just wasnt enough in this case ;)

Well, its been a while since i last saw the movie (right now i watch paranoia agent of the same director ), but i do kinda think that if u paid really close attention you could guess it. I mean the idea that the detective gets her is unrealistic, its her job to make her patients feel comfortable and good. Its only natural that the detective falls in love ...
Then, she really gets on the fat guys nerve, shes paying too much attention to his faults, even though he easily gets the job done (as he points out at one point) . When women nag about anything they dont need to, its a safe bet that more feelings are involved. Its like she wanted to rationalize for herself how wrong and bad he was (for her).
But all in all i favor relationships in movies that are more "realistic". I mean the guy got nothin going for him apart from the genius thing. He could have been funny, or a little bit cynical something that lets the viewer see something different in him than a big baby. (well he did shine through at the end, as the knight in shining armor so to speak...)
well its a tough question, but i can say that i wasnt disappointed.

reply

Yeah it was ridiculous. Why would a smart pretty girl like that fall for a fat disgusting slob? They just did it to satisfy the main audience, you know the big fat anime otaku freaks.

reply

Not everyone in the world is as superficial as you and I. But to act like a dick about it puts you in a class lower than the rest of us.

You would have had a stronger point if the film didn't play it for comic relief. I was surprised by the stuck in the elevator scene and the jokes on him ordering a large quantity of food. But then again, comedy doesn't travel well in different cultures.

I was disappointed by the fact that the romance was so underdeveloped and it never appeared to be beyond a professional working relationship between the two. They could have added some flirting or sexual tension throughout the story. It just so seemed tacked on to the end that I wouldn't be surprised if it came about in a rewrite.
