Why DID Cain kill Abel?
This question was brought up in the movie between Fr Anatoli and Fr Iov. I thought it was a brilliant use of this reference.
Anyone (other than howTodie) have any thoughts on the matter?

Maybe Envy.. no?
shareBecause God loved Abel more...
sharewhat kind of god is that? favoritism sucks. i thought he was supposed love everyone one equally. and then there is this chosen people crap. what about the other "peoples"? what are they? chopped liver? just put on the earth so that the "chosen people" have somebody to stomp on?
shareThere is small reference to the answer in the movie itself. The jealous priest says something about why God only listens/accepts Fr.Anatoli's offerings and not his. He is trying hard in every prescribed way but hasn't gained the same level of spirituality as Fr.Anatoli. So the whole reference is a pretty good one. Abel being pure of heart and not wanting anything in return was favored by God while Cain grew more and more jealous!

Well put! There has to be more to this that we just don't understand. At least I don't.
Just don't kill anybody, mm'kay? Thanks.

The answer to which you're responding is incorrect. God did NOT love Abel more; he favored Abel's sacrifice more. His love of Cain & Abel was equal & if Cain had put forth more effort, God would've favored his sacrifice just as much. Instead, Cain allowed his jealousy of Abel to overcome him & instead of doing what he was asked, he killed his brother.
shareWhat are you gonna do about it?
shareCuz he got the sox mixed up.
Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.
I just saw the movie and was very moved.
I also thought the Cain/Abel reference was quite good, but it seems that the question was answered by its recipient toward the end. He said something about how he had made sacrifices for others like Fr. Anatoly, and his sacrifices are never accepted.
So it's about one who has a martyr complex, believing himself to be performing an admirable service... and that's just the problem, he believes his service is admirable. This as opposed to Fr. Anatoly's approach, who cannot bear his own sin and unworthiness, and so his approach is acceptable to God.
And so we pray unceasingly, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on this sinner - and we hope that someday this attitude will be genuine in our heart.
